The Clydes and Athenas Playlist - Whats on your iPod/MP3 player when you ride?
I find it hard to ride without some kind of music in the background. If your like me, what do you listen to? Take out your music player, whatever it may be. Put it into shuffle mode and list the first 5 songs that play. NO CHEATING. First 5 only. If the theme song from Fraggle Rock plays, list it. Maybe we can expand each others musical horizons here.
Here's my first 5:
1. Pantera - Cemetary Gates
2. Descendents - Cant go Back
3. The Raconteurs - Many Shades of Black
4. Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - Hey, Hey, What Can I Do
5. Queens of the Stone Age - Go with the Flow
Thats it, so simple a fat guy on a bike could dream it up...Oh. I did

I'm probably different than most.
In my right ear:
All Christian - Praise
Casting Crowns
Bebo Norman
Sonic Flood
MercyMe
Mark Schultz
In my left ear:
The sweet sound of the V-8 trying to run me down...

Song - Artist (Genre)
Back Against the Wall - Cage the Elephant (Southern Alt Rock)
Phantom Part II - Justice (French House Trance)
Cyanide - Metallica (Metal)
When Broken Is Easily Fixed - Silverstein (Screamo)
Meaning in Tragedy - As I Lay Dying (Metalcore)
I also listen to Classic, 80's and 90's Rock, All forms of techno (not just house and trance), the blues, and more, but five songs and not one of those.

I've never used shuffle, but took the challenge:
1) If it Makes You Happy - Sheryl Crow
2) Suburban Eyes - Thelonius Monk
3) #41 - Dave Matthews Band
4) Rex's Blues - Townes van Zandt
5) The Animal Trainer and the Toad - Mountain
Love to use the ipod when exercising, never when riding on the street.

Hindemith, Organ Concerto, second movement - Anton Hellier, ORF Symphony
Schubert, Die Schoene Mullerin - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone; Gerald Moore, piano
Flotow, Overture to the opera "Martha" - Josef Lee Gruber, Vienna Symphony Orchestra
"Humor Say" (Elizabethan lute song) - The Good Pennysworths
Haydn Symphony 94 ("Surprise"), third movement - Thomas Fey, Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra
I hate shuffle for classical. You get a mess like above, with segments of works lifted from their context.

My mp3 doesn't shuffle.
So here are the first 5 that come up when I hit "All Songs":
"Forever (Instr.)" -- Queen, A Kind of Magic
"A View to a Kill" -- Duran Duran
"After the Fall" -- Journey
"All Eyes" -- Heart
"Ay Yo" -- Melanie Fiona
Not very representative of the total package, though. Everything from Patti LaBelle to Evanescence, Halestorm to Marvin Gaye, Stylistics to Twisted Sister and Guns n Roses.

Haven't met you yet - Michael Bublé
Does your mother know - Abba
B Bad - Terry Shaw
America - Neil Diamond.
Feeling Alright - Huey Lewis
Dissfunktion - Manteca
Ooops that's six, and yes I know those are all different genres, Big Band, Disco, Bluegrass, Theatrical, Rock and Fusion Jazz. I listen to a little of everything, except Punk and Hip-Hop, neither of which makes any sense to me.
Cycle 1 is mostly Christian stuff and Cycle 2 is Christmas music, Cycle 3 is just about everything else, Cycle 4 is classical and still being developed. I keep them all on the computer, once every couple of months I dump what's on the machine and put the next cycle on it.

You guys are a bad influence. I got my new mp3-player phone with external speaker, then I read that other mp3 thread and thought I'd see how it worked for me on the bike. Now I don't want to ride without it. I rove the countryside annoying dogs and pedestrians* for miles around.
"(What it Felt Like to Fall)" by The Robot Ate Me
"Sea World" by The Phoenix Foundation
"En Gallop" by Joanna Newsom
"Sister Golden Hair" by America (lol)
"The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us" by Sufjan Stevens
Wish it had been a better cross-section including my not-as-sissy side (my first love is soul music, followed closely by classic black gospel), but NO CHEATING! So there you have it.

Yeah I avoid riding with mp3, however i do run with my mp3 player in. but when you run you are either a) on the sidewalk or b) facing traffic so you can see the cars trying to run you down. even riding without mp3 player in hearing cars at a good clip is hard, as is hearing other riders, and i tend to ride in a group doing a paceline so you need to be able to hear.

I do agree that riding on the road with headphones on is an accident waiting to happen, I have the luxury of nearly 45 miles of converted rail trails right across the street from me. So lets just call this post "Whats on your MP3 player when you work out and can safely wear it."
Strange mix today:
Willie Nelson - Workin Man Blues
The Stooges - Raw Power
Steve Earle - Copperhead Road
Johnny Cash - Five Feet High and Rising
The Grateful Dead (Dicks Picks #9 Madison Square Garden 9/16/90) - Tennessee Jed <---I was at this show :-)

I leave the Ipod on the dresser when I ride. I usually have something by the Beatles, Rush, ELO, Queen, Tom Petty, or Allan Sherman going around in my head as I ride. Sometimes all at the same time.

So on my shuffle:
about 10 songs by Cruxshadows (Birthday, Sophia, Winter Born, Quicksilver, many others) Great pounding music.
Flogging Molly (Drunken Lullabies, May The Living Be Dead In Your Wake)
Foo Fighters
Garbage
INXS
Killers
Mew (Special, only song that fits a playlist like this, great band though)
Morningwood (Nu Rock, Nth Degree)
Silversun Pickups
Whigs
Sleigh Bells (New addition, *very* tasty stuff)
Cruxshadows is...heh. Go find lyrics to Birthday and tell me that's not a potential Clyde theme song.

I've been meaning to create a thread on this. I saw someone commuting on a bike this morning with earplugs in.
As much as I'd love the sweet sounds of Fu Manchu to power me up this hill, I just don't think it's safe on a road with any possibility of traffic.
Maybe offroad or on logging roads....
But I know a lot of cyclists ride with earbuds in.
