Haven't had a chance until now to post a photo. As I've posted here, my journey began on a Trek 7.2FX in May. Sold it on Craigslist and bought a Trek 1.1 in June. Wasn't very happy at all with the 1.1 compared to even the 7.2 hybrid but I wanted to stick with a road bike. Decided to bite the bullet and get a 2.1. My bike budget is gone for a long time.

Looks sweet. What did you not like about the 1.1 that made you make the switch?

I'm 6'2" and 237lbs currently. I felt some flex in the crank when I would stand and try to really hammer up a hill. It also had trouble staying adjusted it seemed. I went to a bike shop in Paducah who carries Trek and he said he doesn't even carry the 1.1 because it's crap compared to other entry level bikes. My buddy just bought a 1.1 however and so far he's happy with it. I'm riding upwards of 400 miles per month however and wanted a better bike. He rides half that so the 1.1 might work out for him.

I was gonna ask about height and weight. Great looking ride. Do you trust those spokes 100%, ever get the willies on a corner?

I know Trek stopped using them sometime in 2010 due to concerns with heavier riders. I haven't had any issues. I don't ride extremely fast in corners to be honest. I'm dropping weight fast so I hope they hold up. Sure can't afford new wheels right now.

I had a very similar progression to you, ScottBGKY. I started out for a year on a 7.2FX. I then got the 1.2 (which was their entry level road bike then). Then I came into some extra money, and upgraded to a 2.3 a couple month after the 1.2. I really like my 2.3 and it seems that 2.x bikes are miles above the 1.x bikes. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I've enjoyed mine.

Nice ride. I had a 1000 & can relate for the crank / bottom bracket jumping around. I put it on my trainer & was AMAZED at how much the thing flexed back & forth. I get none from my Cannondale.

I have the same bike Scott it is pretty awesome. I've got the rear wheel trued once after about 150 miles. No problems since. I am 6'3 and 267 started on the 2.1 at 280ish. Hey the rims have a 5 year warranty from trek. They are good with the warranty and will replace them. Eventually if you break them you can get the non paired wheels I am pretty sure, but I have had no issues with mine, and I ride the northeast where the roads really suck.

I'm glad to see this thread for a couple of reasons. I've been telling myself when I get under 200 I'll reward myself with a new road bike, and the 2-series is one of the ones I'm considering. I'd like the 2.3, but don't know if I can swing the cost, so the 2.1 is definitely a possibility. The other reason is durability of all the low-spoke-count OEM wheels that are all over the market now. Being an old-timer, I've never had a road wheel with fewer than 36 spokes, so these new ones give me a little pause. So on both counts, bike, and wheels, it's good to see some Clyde feedback.

I have ridden mine hard at 275. I usually crank away around 21 MPH average. I do group rides with riders that are much lighter than me and I keep up. I've done two tris on them they took it. I have done hills out of the saddle on them and they took it. I would seriously not have any issues with them at 200 as I have ridden them at 275. What is the upgrade from the 2.1 to the 2.3? I almost had myself talked into the lowest Madone, but I think the wife would have killed me on the spot.

The 2.3 doesn't look worth the price gaps to me. SSR to Race wheels, Shimano R to Shimano 105 crank, SSR to Race Blade Handlebar, and Tiagra to 105 brakes. Meh, I think the 2.1 is great as is.

My brother has the 1.2, and he's happy with that. He also weight only 170.

I think at retail the difference is about $330. I know what you mean about the Spousal Approval Factor. My own wife is undergoing this same weight loss journey as I, and she's incredibly supportive about it, and looks forward with great anticipation to my new, lighter, self, and understands what a HUGE milestone 200 pounds is. But even with that, she's already asked the dreaded question, "what do you need a new road bike for?"

My wife has been downright pissed about my bike upgrading, lol. What started out as buying a cheap hybrid to ride until I fully healed from microfracture surgery on my left knee has turned into a full on addiction. I absolutely love biking. I finally convinced her it was better to let me get what I want and be done with it for a while. She is however happy I'm getting back to my normal size. 11 pounds down and about 40 to go. I haven't been under 200 lbs in 10 years but hopefully will be again before 2011 hits.

LOL the wife factor is kind of a funny thing. I think i finally looked at her and said look I've spent $250 to do triathlons this summer that is money pissed away without a bike. You don't want me to get a cheap bike because I will just buy another one soon there after. Just let me get the bike I want and be done with it. She caved. She is liking the weight loss. I am below the weight of when we met and probably 50 down from my max, and I don't know that I will ever touch below 200. The cycling has just been added in this year. Next task may be somehow figuring out how to get a triathlon bike into the house.
