Clyde Ride this Saturday, 7/31/10 SEPA

Anyone up for a Clyde Ride?

It'll probably end up being spent on the SRT or something near to it, mileage and destination TBD.

If you're free this Saturday and in the Philadelpha/Reading/West Chester ish area, or feel like making a drive out this way, reply to the thread or send me a PM and we'll figure out the particulars.

You're organizing a clyde-ride and I had to come on here to hear of it!

That's it, I want a divorce!

I'm in. Where and when are we starting? Mont Clare? Oaks? Audubon? Valley Forge?

Lol, Sayre. I was going to call you this afternoon.

Mont Clare to Schwenksville was a nice ride, so if nothing else appeals it works for me. I also wouldn't mind riding a section that I haven't been on before. Regardless of route, I'd like to get started by 10am, that way it's not so blazing hot yet but still gives everyone a chance to get there.

Sorry I'm working, but just so you know it looks like the weather great. Mid 80's, low humidity, and very little chance of precipitation.

Enjoy!

Well, if you guys are set on Mont Clare to Schwenksville, I can meet you in Mont Clare around 10:00 if I leave at sunrise.

If you guys want to be real monsters, I say we go get some cheese steaks. I could meet you guys near Oaks. I think the Schuylkill River Trail meets the Perkiomen Trail right behind the Convention Center. It would be about 55 miles round-trip for you guys, or about 135+ for me. (Yee haw!) I'm game if you guys are.

Sorry, I'm working this weekend; I plan on riding to work (Manayunk to Center City), but I won't be able to meet up with you. Feh.

Note to self, next time decide earlier than Thursday that I'm organizing a ride on a Saturday, with no particulars in mind!

Sayre has no other mode of transport besides pedaling, that makes the Mont Clare to Schwenksville ride effectively a Reading to Mont Clare to Schwenksville ride for him. The ride from his house to Mont Clare is 37 miles, and I don't want him to go it alone. His trike won't fit in or on my car, so...

Neil, we'll meet you in Mont Clare. Sayre and I are riding a century.

Don't know how I just got talked into this, but that's the plan. If you decide you want to ride the whole thing, we're leaving Sayre's house in Reading at 6am. Otherwise, see you in Mont Clare at 10. I think we have everyone's phone numbers, but I'll PM it to you anyways.

Anyone watching this thread, wish us luck, I think (especially) I'm going to need it!

I spoke to Bluetrane2028 a few minutes ago. I'm confident he can do the whole thing.

I'm meeting them at Mont Clare at 10:00, which will be a rest stop for the two. I'm bringing Gatorade and trail mix. I'll join them for the trip up and back.

"Lack of sleep makes cowards of us all." I'm not riding after all, but I'll be at the trailhead for the two with Gatorade, as promised. I'll try to bring back a photo or three.

About 10:45, at the 37 mile mark in Mont Clare:

Sayrekulp is the one riding the chaisse-lounge, Bluetrane2028 is on the mountain bike. Both seemed in good shape. They'd made a little side trip to a fruit stand earlier for more fuel, and they guzzled Gatorade while talking to me.

Bluetrane2028 is in a good mood because he's a third of a way into a century and he's feeling strong. He also knows he's awesome!

Time to head out. Lunch stop is on the Perkiomen Trail. SK and Bluetrane headed out at 11:00. I'll be seeing them about 2:30 on the way back. Now to get some sleep......

To the victory celebration - warm blue Powerade - under the Penn Street Bridge.

96 miles in, 4 miles to Reading. Neither Sayrekulp nor Bluetrane had ridden a metric before, let alone an English century. Heck, Bluetrane hadn't ridden more than 38 miles in a day this year. Both men were hurting by this point.

69 miles in, 31 to go. This is just before turning onto Egypt Road in Mont Clare, crossing the bridge into Phoenixville.

Mile 74. Bluetrane2028 unwrapping something just before he enters The Farmer's Daughter:

Both men withdrawing after they had finished at The Farmer's Daughter.

It was.... at least for me. :-)

Although my day got off to a bad start with my headache, it got better after I had a short nap. Then Sayrekulp and Bluetrane2028 agreed to let me leapfrog them for the final 34 miles. I got some exercise out of it, walking about two miles at various trailheads waiting for them. But more importantly I got the pleasure of being able to document their achievement.

Once they've rested a little bit and eaten I'm sure both Sayrekulp and Bluetrane2028 will tell us about the ride. :-)

Both riders must still be low on carbs, because neither has posted about their ride.

In the meantime, here's the route, minus a couple of miles for my hand-plotting the trail portions and the five miles the guys rode to the trailhead:

https://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/445124

60 miles were on the Thun, Schuylkill River, and Perkiomen Trail, and 40 miles on roads between Mont Clare and Pottstown and the Birdsboro to Gibraltar segment of the Thun. Mont Clare to Pottstown is the big missing link in the Schuylkill River Trail, and the riders had little choice but to ride hilly and busy Rt. 724. I was amazed the number of dead animals littering the shoulder, including a deer in full rigor mortis. (I bet they took the lane when they saw that ahead of them!)
