How many miles you got on that hub, bub?
(I've read the hubs section of the forums - but I still have a question).
What hubs do you have, what mileage do you have on them, and what kind of trouble have you had?
My current wheel hubs (road bike):
Mike Garcia's Speedcific hubs. They have 12K miles with zero maintenance. Just now I'm noticing the cartridge bearings are getting slightly ratty. This is the most I've ever got out of a wheel set by almost 2X.
In the past I've run a mtb with:
1) LX hub, cones shot in 2K miles, stripped teeth off the freehub by 4K miles.
2) XT hub, cones shot in 4K miles, stripped a tooth off the freehub at 3K miles, rode it til about 6K and gave up on it.
3) XT Hub, cones shot in about 5K miles, stripped teeth by 6K miles, rode it for 7K miles.
I'm thinking about Ultegra but I sure do like zero maintenance and 12K miles. I've never had that on Shimano.

The only problem with a Shimano hub is the rear tandem hub, maybe 7,000 then needed to be repacked with new bearings.

7500 trouble free miles in two years on Shimano 105 hubs. I'm between 205 and 225 lbs during this usage period.

Paul High Flange rear hub - 3kish miles, smooth as butter, no issues. Ridden in rain, snow, mud, etc.
Mavic Aksium hub (semi-retired) - 11k miles, definitely not quite as smooth, but runs just fine. Ridden in snow, rain, mud, etc ... Retired because the aksium sucked, wouldn't stay true. Hub is fine. Now a trainer hub.
White H3 rear hub - just ticked over 1k miles, I'll let you know

Almost 4K miles on the cheesy Xero hubs that came stock on my commuter. I beat the crap out of it and bike, rider and load are easily 270 lbs. Still rolling smooth and quiet.

A year and a half on LX hubs. No problems.
This may horrify some riders. Regarding re-packing, I opened the hubs up and Filled them with grease. My rational goes back to boat trailer wheels. If they are FULL of grease, there is no where for water to get in. Can't see this doing any harm. It is a bit of a waste of grease because most of the grease away from the ball bearings stays perfectly clean. And it is messy to clean out and re-pack. But I've never had hub problems, even when commuting in the temperate rainforest of British Columbia.

Ultegra 6700's seem like a good price point from excel but I haven't had good luck with XT stuff in the past. It's good to hear some success stories.
I've never heard of Paul - I'll track em down.
Thanks

I had XT hubs for 17 years, 1987-2004 (Conservatively 1500 miles per year) , way more at the start, and less as I bought more bikes.
But after a few years of becoming my winter beater (salt ,sand, snow), the rear hub froze solid.
By the way I did 0 , ZERO, NADA maintenance on them all the time I had them.
If I did I might have gotten a few more years out of them, heck they might still be alive today, but why bother
after 17 years it is time to upgrade.

Man your hard on equipment... Lets see, mountain bike: Front: Formula FM-31, Rear: Formula FM-32-8, over 5,000km (3,000 miles) never touched. These have seen everything from broiling sun to freezing cold, have seen rain and snow conditions. They have a water resistant mechanism, so I am loathe to touch them lest they not seal properly again.
Road bike was rescued before going into a dumpster and other then a tight cone on the rear which I loosened up, it's fine and probably original. It needs new rims, which means new spokes, I doubt that I will reuse the old hubs, which look rusty and crusty, but work fine, simply because if I am spending over $200 on wheels then it makes sense to use all new parts, besides I can use the old wheels until the new ones show up.
