Missbumble bounce back - 24 Hours of Booty
HI Guys - Well a few months back I went on a BRAG ride for 75 miles in the heat and got very sick later that day. I believe I was dehydrated. HUGE HUGE headache and could barely move. A friend fed me ice chips and some food...and I managed to take a migraine medication (Shot) and sleep it off. But it left its mark. I no longer thought 100 miles riding in the sun was fun! So last summer I rode a ton - this summer hardly ever.
Anyway - since I have not been riding in the heat I have gained weight and felt sad. I feel like I cannot just join a group ride anymore as I am embarrassed how I look and my speed. I also do not want to hold anyone up.
Anyhow - the old Sue must have emerged as I signed up with my bike group to do a charity ride. Not just any ride - but the 24 Hours of Booty. I joined a team so we all will not ride 24 hours, but as much or as little as we want. I hope to ride a few hundred miles over the course of the ride. But that may be impossible.
Yesterday I rode 45 miles on a flat trail and it took 3.5 hours. So I guess if I ride 8 hours maybe 100 miles... so 300 miles would be my max. Ok maybe I will shoot for 150 though anything over 100 would be a ton for me at this stage.
I work away from my home every week - no bike- so I am not able to train much and am away without bike next weekend... So I think this will be a challenge. But I have sent out a few fundraising letters, received a donation, so now must do it! I think it will be awesome to be back with my bike group and their wonderful comradery. We are riding around Stone Mountain. Anyway I am hoping this is the start of my riding season. Forgot to mention that tidbit! It's a 5mile loop with hills!! A tough ride. Anyway I am hoping this is the start of my riding season and my losing weight.
OK so wish The Bee Luck as I commit to raising money for Cancer, Getting on the Bike, Devoting myself to the 24 Hour ride, and hopefully getting thinner!
Sue

We don't gain anything by suffering in the heat.
I tried this August ( The hottest Recorded ever in Houston Texas)
The Heat won. 353 miles the first week by going out early in the dark.
100 mi Sat in temps to 87*
72 mi Sun temps to 90*
The Heat won again.

I think you will like the 24 hour ride. A couple of my buddies did it in Columbia, Maryland last month and had a blast. I stopped by to see them and wanted to kick myself in the butt for not signing up in time. I am doing it next year. Good luck to you and enjoy the ride.

Don't forget that over a 24 hour period, you start losing steam as the day and night go on so 300 miles could be a tough goal. Certainly not unreachable, though; Go for it!

Nice to hear from you again, Sue. Good luck with the ride. Dehydration is nothing to take lightly. Especialy with the kind of symptoms you mentioned. Please be careful and drink lots. Start the ride well hydrated and drink before you get thirsty. I don't want you hurting yourself!

OK - Fabulous event!!! I had no idea it would be so incredible!! I am too tired to post pic but will do so soon. The ride took place at Stone Mtn park and was a 1.3 miles loop with a 5% hill. The hill was short...but it kept showing up each 1.3 miles...I think it actually got steeper....
I rode the first part of the ride at 2PM for 20 miles
Break for 30 minutes
Rode 20 more, break for dinner
then finally rode another 20 and then tried to sleep but ut was way too cold on my sheets in my tent (next time sleeping bag)
Woke up and rode at 4 AM. There were about 10 others ont he course at that time. EVery time I went by the start...a woman would cheer and ring a cow bell...even at 4AM!!
Got passed by Bob Roll alot. He always seemd to zoom by on the hill. Then again almost everyone passed me on the hill. Atleast I kept up pretty well with the Unicyclist (he rode over 30 miles!!!)
Anyway all told I rode 105 miles. Pretty good for not riding much this year.
Only issue - late Sunday/Monday got very sick - POUNDING headche so I think that was dehydration... so next time I will drink a ton of water before hand. Starting...now.
Ride Tinme: 08:46:39
Avg: 12.03mph
Max: 33.25 (I confess, that was when we escaped the short loop and took the longer harder Stone Mountain 5 mile loop)
Avg Cadence 70

Good job. I would think a 1.3 mile loop would get boring in an event like this.

Sounds like fun - congrats!! How any people can say they've been passed by former 7-11 rider and all around funny man Bob Roll? Very cool.

Some thought the 1.3 mile loop boring.. Hence we snuck out and did a 5 mile hilly looptwice so they could feel less bored. I, however, loved the 1.3 mile loop. I felt like I was in a criterium - we had one awesome turn with hay on the sides so we would have a soft landing if we crashed...I felt so professional as i leaned into the turn. I loved seeing the giant start sign when I came around..... I know to each his own..... I loved it.

105 miles is a great achievement. Way to go.
It's fun biking at 4:00 am on a 24 hour event. Quiet, peaceful.
Biking through the sun rise is really beautiful.
But you have to drink constantly! I would guess at least a big bike bottle every 20 miles.
