My Journey.. it keeps me motivated...

Hi everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself and keep a post going with all my efforts.. I am 31 years old and not in shape.. I recently just bought a mountain bike and absolutely love everything about it... Its a 2008 Trek 9.0 Carbon... I haven't had the time yet to commit to riding everyday but that will start soon...

No excuses on my end.. I just work from 0600 - 0000 some days and need those 6 hours of sleep, so no time for riding.. I did ride my bike a few times and everytime I rode, I burned 2000 calories or more... I have a Polar heart rate monitor and a bodybugg to try to keep track of things...

I will post more when I start my regimented training... I live in the Berkshires of Massachusetts and hope to meet some locals for some rides...

Safe travels...
-Jessica

Jessica, welcome to the forum. Nice bike. Here's hoping you have as much fun riding it as I've had riding my bike.

cappuccino911 09-29-10 07:46 PM

welcome aboard! I'm trying to plan a trip up to the berkshires in a couple of weeks, know of any good places to stay? Looking for something kind of like a cabin with a wood burning stove but not really camping per se, just a log cabin style house to rent for a long weekend?

What do you do for work that keeps your working 18 hours?

MVclyde 09-29-10 07:50 PM

Welcome Jessica! Great bike and great pics. Looks like a nice place to ride.

Welcome Jessica, Nice pics

Welcome. Sweet looking bike. Just to caution you on "calories burned" if you are getting the numbers from your heart rate monitor you maybe overestimating the number. I use a garmin and cut the calories burned in half to be closer to what was burned. I don't rely on it to much other than to compare one ride to another.

When i'm riding hard it says I'm burning about a 1000 calories an hour so actually maybe 500. Hey, I'm having fun and losing weight so I guess it doesn't matter I'm not cutting my calories that close.

EasyEd 09-30-10 03:50 PM

Welcome. Sweet looking bike. The only way I can make time to ride is to commute to work by bike. Do you live close enough to your job to do that?

jboyd 09-30-10 08:22 PM

That is one hell of a nice bike:thumb:

SHOW OFF, I wish I had a ride that sweeeeeeeet. Congratulations and welcome to a good bunch of people. You are pretty good with a camera, I bet those aren't your first pictures. And I applaud that you are riding trails, that is where real fun starts.

BTW-Go Broncos!

Here is a road ride to try some time in the future. It is in honor of fallen officers.

I have a couple of cop friends who ride every year. They ride Treks like you. These boys are some beasts.

Hi everyone.. as I stated before I needed a couple of weeks before I could start my journey with 110% effort... And today was my day 1.... I cleaned off my bike, got my camelbak ready,... and off I went. I drove to the Massasoit State Park in Taunton, MA and decided to get lost on the trails.. I am new to single track riding, and my day definitely showed for that... I found some great trails and had a blast. I fell once; soft sand and I couldn't get my foot out of the clip fast enough and bam, down I went. I was fine, chuckled and got right back on. I will post pics of my day... I went out for approximately 1.5 hours.

POLAR heart rate monitor said I burned 2435 calories. My Bodybugg said I burned 1982. I was really sweating and climbing some great hills.. I plan on getting back out there tomorrow. Aiming for 4 days of riding a week... I truly believe the bigger you are, the easier it is for you to lose weight..

How do you carry golf clubs on that thing?

;)

Went to school and worked in Mass.( Boston area) for 12 years about a hundred years ago. Beautiful state and you obviously live and work in a gorgeous area. I would just ride for the joy of it - the calorie counting thing is notoriously inaccurate, but may measure relative total work. With that bike and those trails you won't have any problem burning lots of calories.

Daspydyr 10-17-10 06:14 PM

Its nice that your bike will pose for you like that. Great pictures, again. Stupid Broncos! Brady made a couple of solid 4th quarter drives.

I'll trade Vegas area for your neck of the woods for riding any time. I think the dirt and rocks change colors a little bit this time of year. Then the body of a local drug pusher got dumped beside one of my regular trails. Stupid druggers!

Beautiful area to ride in. I wished I had gotten into cycling more when I live in Providence. We rode the East Bay bike path a few times but never ventured out to any trails. Beautiful bike.

jyossarian 10-17-10 07:36 PM

How'd you get over the log, bunnyhop it?

GO GIANTS!

cappuccino911 10-17-10 07:52 PM

What the hell were you doing in taunton if you live in the Berkshires? I was just up in the Pioneer valley for UMass Homecoming. LEaves were perfect, weather held out for us and got a few road rides in around the area, it was great. And sorry guys but it's 100% GO PATS!!!

PVDRIDER 10-22-10 01:58 PM

Hi everyone,,, I have been riding for the past few days... and have had a blast... I rode in Massasoit again on Wednesday and took yesterday off due to a hail storm in the Berkshires.... Today I went to Pittsfield State Forest and road a lot of the loop trails.. Turkey / Deer Trail, Lulu loop.... such a blast... I was on the Deer trail and hit a root with a divet and I went over....

Boy did I go over the bars... the front tire stayed in the root and I went up in the air and landed on my right shoulder... I heard 3 cracks, but made sure I was still alive... My friend was with me and she saw me fly..lol Im ok,,, just a little shooken up... we rode back to the car and I felt ok... Im sure the soreness will come tomorrow...

Heres a couple pics from today...
