Should I worry about this? [pictures]

So Ive had my road bike for about 3 weeks now ('06 Scott Speedster S30, purchased used from original owner's daughter (original owner deceased; not bike-related)) figured it was time to figure out how to change a tire. Read this about removing tires without levers: http://www.teamestrogen.com/content/asa_levers

tried it; it worked. Figured I'd give the rim a look since i bought the bike used. rim tape looked good, everything else looked good, until i saw this:

other side of rim:

It looks like a small crack. it's not really visible on the exterior, can only really see it on the inside of the rim with the tires off like this. Is this a huge problem? A tiny problem? Am I risking catastrophic failure? The rims are Alex R500s.

Thanks fellow Clydes

doesn't look like a problem, you might see that on both rims.

That is probably the seam of the rim. its normal.

cappuccino911 10-23-10 08:29 PM

yep, pic isn't great but it's probably the seam. they do have to join the two sides together somehow

I was thinking seam also. Probably nothing.

CliftonGK1 10-23-10 11:29 PM

I agree that it's the seam.

Take a look; I bet it's 180 degrees from the valve stem, and the rim label is over top of it.

Oh! No! It's not a problem. I just took out an insurance policy out on you Hee Hee (Mechanic theme)

Looks good. Hea! I actually have one of those too

rumrunn6 10-24-10 05:59 AM

that is some clean rim tape

rfmarotti 10-24-10 11:21 PM

Thanks everyone. I'll ride it with confidence (as soon as this bay area monsoon let's up.) @rumrunn I know! I mean the bike was supposedly used heavily for at least a year. I expected a horror show. Don't think it's an issue of new replacements either as the tube was labelled a Scott tube and the rims matchup with the bikepedia stats.

It is, in fact, 180 degress from the valve stem.
