Newbie with weight loss as a goal

Just ordered my bike and have a goal of dropping pounds and inches while building my body back to a healthier me.
Current weight 320 pounds, 50 inch waist, diabetes, high blood pressure, high colesteral, one heart attack and three stents installed. Will be 63 in December and want to be around for a looooong time more.
You folks are an inspiration to me!!!

Welcome! As a fellow heart attack survivor (MI at 44 and I'm now 53) I can tell you this is the best I've felt in at least 20 years and I've only been cycling 7 weeks.

There is not much to it except to try. Don't push or over exert yourself. Just make sure you are comfortable and enjoy it.

And don't tell yourself "wow I biked a lot, I deserve a treat" or you will undo the goodness. I only lose weight cycling when I'm counting calories.

magohn, my new bike is not an expensive bike, just a comfortable rider with 21 speeds. Here is a link to what it will look like and the specs.

I used to live about 70 miles north of Indy in a small town called Peru. Wife was born and raised there. We moved to the flatlands of NC in 94 and only get back there for visits. Will be heading there in July '11 for 45th class reunion.

Cant beat a "comfort" bike - looks like a winner. I ride a road-bike but as the winter nights draw in Im wondering if I should invest in something similar for the dark and dangerous nights. Nothing like riding a road-bike in the dark and hitting a few hundred fallen pine-cones from last night storm

45th class reunion. I used to think that kinda talk was for old guys. Now I am one. I returned to riding and better health for the past 14 months. It has been a journey and a ton of fun. I have some much more of my life back in my control. I used to surrender everything to age and just not feeling good. I feel better and "look better" than I have in years. Enjoy the journey. This place and training and Nutrition have been very helpful to me.

That will come for sure - its a simple formula - just keep biking! I hope I have got through my "lack of motivation" period as I have now been cycling 3-4 times a week (short runs in the work-week and a long run at the weekend) since February. I have a simple mind-trick, set a schedule and keep to it. Obviously things happen in life that lend us to change plans but on a scheduled biking day, I have taught myself to not think about why I dont want to ride because "Im tired" etc. If I dont think about it, I cant talk myself out of it too easily

Somebody posted here a while back "Ive never been disappointed that I went for a ride, only when I did not" - if its only for 20 mins - get out there - its a lot of fun

Bike is here, adjusting it to fit me and test riding in the rain. Cannot believe bikes come without kickstands. Gonna have to get one cause I ain't laying this one down when I'm not riding.

Weight loss is rather simple math I-O=C where:

I is calories In this is what you eat, the ideal is to eat foods that have the highest nutritional load per calorie, remember that processing often reduces the nutritional value and increases the calories, so you want to eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Avoid things like Sodas which have no natural state, but are just liquid chemicals, this includes the artificially sweetened ones....

O is calories Out this is what you do, the more active you are the more calories that you use, remember the 15 minute rule, if you can walk there in less then 15 minutes, walk, if you can't walk, but can ride there in less then 15 minutes then ride, only drive the car if you can't walk or ride in 15 minutes or less.

C is Change is there are 3,500 calories in 1 pound or 7,700 calories in 1 kilogram an ideal weight loss to shoot for is around 1lb (~ kg) per week, that means that you should shoot for having a calories Out about 500 greater then calories In.

As for rain, it doesn't always stop you from riding, you just need to put fenders on your bike, dress properly and ride on....

Welcome TTNC! I'm sporting 3 stents myself. Take it slow, don't burn yourself out or expect miracles, and the changes will come. Definitely take a picture - you won't believe how much better you look and feel in a few months!
