Clydes/athenas at the gym

How many of y'all have gym memberships? I just signed up to a new gym yesterday, and some would say it defeats the purpose of having a bike, but I think it's almost a necessity in the wintertime and something good to have around as a supplement to biking.

If you do go to a gym, what do you do with your time?

I'm going to try to go six days a week, for now where I do a weightlifting program including core work every other day, then cardio-only every other day. My new gym has a pool, so I plan to try to do some swimming.

I've been going to a gym for so long I'd feel kinda naked without a membership.

I've got one but it goes unused for half the year when the weather is nice. Kind of a waste of money, but I can't convince my wife to give it up. She pays for it, so it's all good.
I usually try to go in the morning, get a cardio workout for about 30 minutes, then if I have time I'll lift some weights, or do core exercises. I have an hour at most when I go because I'm usually lazy in the morning and don't leave the house until the very last minute.

I ride to the gym and lift weights, which is about 5 miles from home. I have drove there less than 5 times in three years. In the winter I do 3-4 days a week and in the summer it's more like 2 or 3 days. My job is physical and the busy season is summer so I cut back a bit.

There's a really nice fitness center in my new apartment building, and I hit the equipment 3 - 4 times a week at my current apartment complex (except for now, due to surgical recovery.) The new place is only 2 miles from the local pool, so I'll be able to head to the open lap swim 3 nights/week, too. I can't wait to get back to riding, but in the mean time this will have to do.

I go to the Y every morning that's not a rest day. It's my first priorty. I do weight lifting with the machines Mon-Wed-Fri and cardio Tue-Thu. Sat is either cardio or interval training. I think of it as an "extra day" and don't decide what I'll do until I'm warmed up. It has a pool and last winter I swam a couple times a week but I wasn't weight lifting then so I don't know if I'll return to that.

The social side of it takes some getting used to but now that I've been going regularly for 16 months it makes sense.The "regulars" including myself wear ear pods and listen to music or television. Chit chat is held to the absolute minimum as most of us want to concentrate on our workout. Saying Hi and smiling is great though.When you see other regulars outside of the Y that's the time when conversation is welcome and you feel comradery.

Newcomers are generally avoided as 90% you'll only see once or twice. It's a shame as they probably need some encouragement but that's the way it is. If they need help to stick with it they need to join an exercise class.Those people are always talking to one another when you see them in the common areas.

Another thing the Y has is a sports program. It's mostly in the evenings. I've avoided seeing what it's about as I'm really afraid of injury. Losing the weight and getting in shape is my focus. I don't want to risk any setbacks.

I have a gym membership. I use it mostly in the winter time. I do about an hour of cardio and then about half hour of lifting every night.

I have a membership to my local Y. I usually go on Mon, Tues, Thur and Fri. Spin classes are included with the membership so I'll do a spin class on Tues and Thur and do some sort of free weight program the other days. I usually do a 5k on the treadmill Mon and Fri. I run outdoors on Wednesdays.

I have two gym memberships. One to the NSA fitness center where I do my heavy lifting, and one to Planet Fitness where I meet up with my wife for extra cardio and light weights.

I attend 3 days a week. On day one I do flat bench, pull ups, chin ups, weighted dips, stabilizer ball push ups, decline bench, dumbbell pullovers, tricept push downs, lat pulls, seated rows, pec flies and supine rows. Day two I do preacher curls, chin ups, supine rows, concentrated curls, hammer curls, back extensions, weighted incline sit ups, ab abductors, and reverse flies. Day three is a repeat of day one but with lighter weight were applicable. After each of these sessions I meet my wife at Planet Fitness. We do an hour of cardio (treadmill, elliptical, exercise bike) and I coach her through various weight machines. More to less whatever she feels like working, we'll do a few sets then move on when she's ready (she's new to lifting so I let her call the shots).

Does a gym membership negate the purpose of a having a bike? Not at all. You got to cross train and one certainly helps the other. You might find that this time of year is the most infuriating time to have a gym membership. All the snow birds are starting to come in followed up by the new years revolutionists in a few months. The good news is that this phenomenon only lasts for 4 to 5 weeks. Mid February is when things start to get back to normal.

During the cooler months, I like to go to spin classes three days per week, and work out with weights for my upper-body one or two other days per week. I prefer to do two spin classes back-to-back on a given day, and lift a few leg-weights after for about a half-hour. That is not always possible. Sometimes I do one spin class before and another after work, and other times I end up torturing myself on an elliptical trainer for the second hour.

Spin class is not like riding outside, but I think that it is a lot of fun, and it keeps my leg muscles generally ready for riding in the spring. I much prefer spin class to torturing myself on a stationary bike alone, an elliptical trainer, or flailing around off-time to the music in a more traditional aerobic class. I'm...dance impaired. While I can do things like run, throw, and catch at the-same-time just fine, once you they start spinning around and/or jumping onto and off of steps, I either move my feet, or I move my arms (pick one).

I have a gym membership and use it for Cardio 3 times a week. It is tough, especially now that we are back to standard time to fit in rides during the week. So I use the elliptical or the spin bike 3 times a week. Monday is a recovery, medium intensity elliptical session. Wed are intervals using the spin bike, unless I can't stand the boredom and then I do hill intervals on the elliptical. Friday is med/high intensity on the elliptical. I try to squeeze a 20-30 mile ride in on the weekend based on family obligations. If the weather is bad I will try to hit a spin class over the weekend.
I work my strength training around the house, Pushups, planks, tricep presses using a chair, etc. That keeps me home with the family instead of at the gym.

Hehe. Similar issue here.
Put me in (almost) any wheeled sport and I'm graceful as a gazelle (even though I'm as big as a gorilla.) Bicycles of all sorts on just about any terrain (I could probably even get my ramp/park skills back if I tried.) Roller skates/blades; I can zip around on either with the best of them. Even used to do park/halfpipe on my blades back in college. I'm not too shabby on a skateboard. I can't ride a unicycle, but that's about it.
Take me off the wheels, and I clomp around like Frankenstein's monster with an inner ear problem.

I have a membership to my local Golds, sort of. I say sort of cause it's free as I "teach" indoor cycling there. Honestly, with three kids, I don't always have time to ride so I use the gym to augment my riding. I mostly do cardio (elliptical) and core work, and some legs. I rarely do any real lifting. It gets used a lot more as it gets colder.

Don't usually end up in this section but something was drawing me here. I am a Clyde, I am also a Cat 1 racer. As I have noted in so many other threads I believe that lifting is an essential part of my training regimen. Off season I lift heavy - race season I curtail the weight back but still train 3 days a week or so. In answering your question I do have a membership and use it regularly.

I use my bike for commuting. I consider it my cardio before and after I ride to the gym. I usually go 3 or 4 times a week. Stationary cardio is to boring for me. I usually repeat chest, shoulders, triceps, and quads one day. The next time I go I do back, biceps, and hamstrings. I will sprinkle in core work as well.

Mrs. Zoxe and I got a gym membership this fall. It's a lot less scary than I thought it would be. After a few weeks I found myself looking forward to it.

I found out last year that 3-4 nights a week is about my max. We tried doing 5 and 6 nights a week and it became a chore. A man can only watch so much Oprah while on the elliptical!!!!

We bought 10 acres this spring and I found that 2 nights a week during good weather was about perfect. We bike 1-2 nights a week, jog on saturday morning, and do yard work the rest of the week. I've dropped 2 inches and 15 lbs since July.

since it gets dark early now cant do group rides Tuesday and Thursday, so been doing spinning and cycling specific weight training 3 to 4 days a week. The spin classes are great for up off the saddle, its improved my sprinting and ability, scenery is an added bonus, sauna and hot tub are not bad either.

Cool answers here, folks.

It seems a lot of you go to the gym year-round. I was worried I'd want to be on my road bike as much as possible when the weather warms back up and my gym membership would be going to waste. But I do need to do some weight training year-round, so hopefully it won't be money thrown away.

My gym has spin classes, but I can't figure out where they're taught yet - they may be in a studio that's locked when not in use, unfortunately. I've tried using the upright stationary bike as a trainer of sorts, but I can't get the seat high enough to replicate conditions with the handlebars on my road bike. I need to work on sprinting, but I've got a long way to go.

They usually have a room that is locked with the spin bikes, until 15 min before the class, there is probably a list at the entrance to the gym, I get there at least an hour early to sign up, usually would stay butt glued to saddle with an occasional lift for a few seconds, the spin class is mostly off the saddle, so it has helped a lot.

New Y opened up 3 blocks from where I work (Schenectady, NY) and they've done a beautiful job on it. I'm trying to stop the roller coaster ride that is my body weight. For the past three years I've weighed an average of 240 lbs, +/- 15 lbs. I'm now at 227, bare naked, and want to be at least this weight in March.

So I'm spinning a couple times a week with upper body weights on alternating days and a real ride on the weekends, as long as I can. I do wish the spin music selection was a bit more...uh...psychedelic, but the classes are nearly full with many tastes to appease. Finishing off last night with the original Ironman (Black Sabbath) was a nice touch tho. Couldn't believe two girls carried on a truly gossipy chat session in the back of the room throughout too. The music is as loud as this old Rock and Roller could ever choose, yet there they were jabbering away about some boyfriend.

Also tried Pilates the other night which seems to me to be just what a cyclist needs to develop 'the other muscles'. Just wish they offered it more than once a week. If you don't know Pilates, think of Yoga with a very sadistic session leader.

I've been toying with the idea of joining one, especially since my insane co-worker has offered to pay $20 a month toward the membership, with the proviso that I'll join him in a relay tri next year. But even with that offer, I'm not sure I can justify the expense. To get access to spinning, which is most of what I'm after (though I would like to do some resistance work too), most of the clubs around here require something other than their "basic" membership level, and money is darned tight right now. We have a Lifestyle Fitness about 5 blocks from the house, and it would sure be convenient, but after cooling my heels there for over an hour Sunday, waiting to talk to someone about membership, I left in frustration and a bit of anger. I went to the Y, but found their cost too high. I have one other community fitness center to try this weekend, but it's in the neighboring town's park district, and whether an Indy resident can join, and at what cost, remains to be seen.

The Y I used to belong to had a program where the fees were on a sliding scale based on your income/expenses, so you might be able to get a membership at the Y cheaper than you think. Maybe.

We bought a couple of machines for the house. Put em by the TV, with a Pilates ball and some dumbells. I knock the dust off of them every once in a while.

In lieu of a monthly gym membership, I invested the money in bikes, running shoes, skis, skates and am eyeing snow shoes, x-country skis, kayaks/canoe, scuba gear, and more bikes. Add in judo to all that stuff and I'd have no time to go to the gym.

In the Fall and Winter I hit the gym every day in the early morning hours for some cardio work on the treadmill.

I still manage to get some miles on my bike in Winter. I leave my ride at work during the week and as long as it's not raining or dense fog manage to get out for an hour mid-day ride.
