What do you gain when you lose?

Saw this slogan from Special K and it got me thinking. (Oh NO!)

Maybe I have a smile on my face all the time but it seems to me that total strangers smile at me and say hi constantly. Yes,I live near a small town (20,000) but I never noticed this before.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

I might have been more accurate to say I gained a life. Period.

I had a pretty good life before. I was surprisingly active at my peak weight of 425; coaching basketball, playing music all the time, loving my family, etc... What I gained is feeling better while doing all of those things, and when coaching I can actually get on the court and demonstrate drills without my knees killing me for hours afterwards.

I am more confident of myself around others. I always had this feeling they were thinking under their breath about me. I am sleeping better, feeling better. I can walk up the hill in our back yard no I mean I can run up the hill in our back yard without having to stop and rest or even be heavy breathed at the top.

As I have been losing slowly over the last year I can ride faster and now hang in rides with my faster friends.

I got the ability to give good advice to my patients -- I couldn't really say "be active and maintain a healthy weight" with a straight face when I was a morbidly obese couch potato.

I've been hovering between 200 and 250 for about 3 years now, so I can't say I've just recently lost a decent amount of weight. Have been at my several-year high of 250 lately and need to bring it down because of the simple fact that I just dropped all this cash on a road bike and it's gonna be much easier for me to pedal around 200-pound me than 250-pound me. As Foghorn Leghorn might say "it's simple physics, son."

Also, I wanna run some 5Ks this spring/summer and it's, again, gonna be easier for 200-pound me to run around than 250-pound me. Not saying I'm gonna lose 50 pounds before spring, I'm just using that as an easy example.

More confidence. Less cringing when I pass reflective surfaces. The impulse to give a huge smile when my husband tells me I'm looking great. Easier time buying clothes in a 'skinny' country as well as better quality and nicer looking ones. More energy. The list goes on and on.

The ability to choose any available seat at the symphony, instead of relying on whatever aisle seats are open.

Seriously. Along with everything else, this one just occurred to me the other day.

I didn't gain this. The Kimmel Center seats are still too small for me. It's the one aspect of concert going that hasn't improved since The Philadelphia Orchestra left the Academy of Music. :-(
