The 2011 500 mile/month challenge

Im going to try to ride 500 miles/month during 2011. Anyone else?

I've done 500 mile/month off-&-on for about two years. This year I'll try to achieve a near perfect record.

Anyone can report any result. Normally, participants will post accumulated miles once or twice as the month progresses, and will then provide a month end total.

It not necessary to meet the 500 mile goal either. If youre tracking your accumulative totals and would like to build-up to 500 miles/month feel free to participate.

Its all about fitness and motivation as a Clyde or Athena.

I'm going all in for 2011. I managed to do it only twice in 2010 (July & October). I want to improve on my mileage and consistency in 2011, so I set this as one of my goals for 2011. Let's see if I can pull this off. If I do, it'll take care of one of my other goals - 6,000 total miles for the year.

I'm in. My bike's still on layaway and I'm going to have to build up to it, but by September my goal is 500 a month...

I'll have to build up to it, but hopefully by the end of the year I'm there.

You will probably reach that goal sooner than you think.

It's -27 C right now, with wind chill. (Don't ask me what that is in F.) Does sitting indoors on the turbo trainer count?

I want to continue to try to do this. Typically, I don't start having 500 mile months till April.

In 2010 I had 6 months over 500 and 6 months below 500 but my average was over 500 for 12 months. This year I hope to have 0 months below 500.

I think I made it in all 12 months last year, actually got in 800 miles in December, which kind of surprised me.

"Does sitting indoors on the turbo trainer count?" There's been previous discussions on that in various places. The problem is, that mileage is not the same as effort. They actually have a place or two in the world where they'll drive you to the top of the mountain and let you coast down, and that counts as miles. Personally, if I was going to include indoor trainer miles, I'd try to base it on hours or total joules generated or something more specifically related to what I was doing rather than miles.

Sign me up for this one. I managed 2,261 last year. 800 of those coming in a single week. That works out to something like only a shade over 100 miles a month. I know I can do more than that this year!!!

I got a new set of rollers for Christmas, so I am going to count those miles in my math. I encourage others to do the same

So do we just post back here with progress?!?! How does this work?!?!?!

Yes, feel free to include Roller miles. I know every winter rider would like to be on the road, but that's not always possible.

I would list any indoor miles separate from any outdoor miles ridden. For example: 211 miles ridden outdoors plus 308 miles ridden indoors for a total of 519 miles.

Feel free to post your progress anytime you like. It's all about staying motivated.

Michael

72 miles MTD

31 miles on New Years day, 41 miles today. Someone has to give these Gulf Coast cyclist some heat, right?!?

I had a New Years ride and enjoyed the beach front travel along the lake here in Chicago. It was 22f with a 22 mph wind. I got in 31 miles.

The lakefront path was battered by recent storms, so I was required to ride on soft embankment to get around the damage. Sure enough, just as I stand up to climb, the rear axle slips out of the drop-outs and I go over. I fell down the embankment, clipped-in (of-course).

Todays ride was flawless. 30 to 35f weather with a 9 mph wind. I rode from Chicago to Lake Forest and back. It's remarkable how much better 32F and mild winds is than 22F and strong winds.

I managed three months in 2010 with over 500: March, June, and July.

My official mileage goal for 2011 is 5000, but I'll try for the 500 per month also. I'm off to a good start for January with about 90 miles.

I need to log in some miles for January. I've managed to ride two out of three days this year ......Doubt I can keep that 67% average riding days up throughout the year, but I'm going to try!!

9.5 miles on Sunday outdoors
9.3 miles on the rollers tonight

18.8 total for the month, 481.2 to go!!!

I don't see a way to do 500 miles per month during the Boston winter. Especially THIS unreal, unbelievable festival of snow, sleet, and other precipitive crap. it's piled so high and wide that I can barely get one car down my street. and the city has given up plowing the MUPs. So commuting has become a real slog and almost not worth it.

But, assuming I do the usual 26.2-mile round trip tomorrow, I'll just barely hit 300 for the month.

546 for January. It's a little easier in Texas then in the Northern states. February is a short month so I have to keep after it to get it done.

Last year I got over 6,000 for the year, but had 5 months under 500.

I may have had a good start for the month, but I'm now sitting at 328 miles, with only one day left. Blah. Hopefully February is better.

This winter in Chicago has been colder with more snow than usual. Nothing as bad as MA this year.
