I've received discounted or free service at bike shops from time to time, simply because I am The Historian. They recognized awesomeness when they saw it.

I clearly need to make my own awesomeness more manifest.

Or spend more time (or money) in bike shops.

I get the "friends & family" discount on everything at my local shop. And many times, for small, quick, little repairs, he doesn't charge me at all. Doing this, he bought my loyalty. Oh, and he made me a so-far-it's-bomb-proof wheel.

That's just the Canadian government protecting everyone else. We all know how bad it is when you Canucks get riled up!

Or have a fantastic experience with a bike shop when you are in a bind, and then tell everyone about it. My August 2008 story about the owner of Confluence Cyclery fixing my rear wheel on a table saw in his basement gave him a lot of good PR along the Great Allegheny Passage. Also his refusing payment because his shop wasn't opening until 2009.

The first weekend I had a new set of tires I blew the rear on a piece of metal. These tires were by no means cheap and I was really bummmed as the metal cut clean through. A product rep I met on the net gave me a new tire at cost. The company will continue to get my business even though he no longer works there.

I had a tire fail (Conti GP 4 Seasons) with a slash on the sidewall - just failed sitting there outside of MacDonalds. My NSLBS (Not So Local BS) replaced the tire gratis based on a latent defect, but then I had purchased a fairly expensive tandem there. I get a perpetual 10% discount which of course doesn't compare with internet prices, but he has spent a great deal of time on the bike for nada. If I need a tandem-length cable I've to it next day by mail as he's 70 miles away. BTW, the Contis have been fine otherwise.

My LBS always takes care of the wifey better than they do me. She knows one of the salesmen from when they raced together years ago.

I'm not quite so sure about the guy who owns the LBS where I bought my road bike, but I'm really starting to develop a nice rapport with his top-notch nice-as-can-be repair guy, which is all that matters anyway, right?

I got a couple of water bottles for free when I bought my bike. But I don't think that counts.

Wow, you guys are lucky. My local bike shop sucks. They used to carry Cannondale, Specialized, Giant, Masi, Merckx, Colnago and more. Now you can get any bike you want AS LONG AS IT'S A TREK. The same goes for accessories - lousy selection.

I get the club discount at one shop, since they're the HQ store for the Seattle International Randonneurs. It's not quite a discount for just being me, but it's not something that just anyone walking into the shop will get.

I get a really nice deal on things at another shop in town just for being me. I'm friends online with at least 4 of the shop employees, I go on their weeknight shop rides, and I stop in to say howdy even when I'm in a condition like I've been for the past 4 months and can't really ride. They're hooking me up with a deal on my Redline Conquest Pro SS frame when I order it in a couple weeks.
