Clyde giving back...

There's a nice, one page article in Bicycling Magazine about Caron Butler--Forward for the Dallas Mavericks. At 6'7" and 228 pounds (I wish I weighed 228 pounds at 5'11",) he's helping to make the world a better place.

Now, I'm not a basketball fan; in fact, I never heard of this guy until I read the article! But here's a man who was arrested 15 times for drug and weapons violations before he turned 15 years old giving back to the community.

He has underprivileged children take a "Peace Pledge" to swear you'll ride safely and be a pillar in your community. Then the do a ride with the Racine, WI police department.

I love reading stories like this. A person struggled in life, came back, and now is giving back! I think that's kind of what a lot of us are doing with our lives--with weight loss.

Here is a link to the article.

There are a lot of stars who support cycling that get very little attention. Dhani Jones is an avid cyclist. There were also some NFL teams that provided bikes to their players during training camp and would then auction them off for charity. I also believe the Phoenix Suns did something similar with their players.

There are also quiet a few actors who commute by bike like Patrick Dempsey.

Its good to see celebrities not only endorse things, but also live it. Unfortunately more gets reported about the negative than the positive. However I do think some athletes do it because they care and not for the publicity.

Part of the Champs Life Skills program at most colleges promotes Community Service. It is ingrained in Student-Athletes to use thier athletic talents and gifts to give back to the community. Most of the Student-Athletes I have been around enjoy the experience.

I really believe that a lot of good could come out of the reporting of what celebrities and ordinary people to help others--and not just special interest stories.

I live in SW Pennsylvania and was amazed when the Steelers played the Jets in the playoffs to learn that Darrelle Revis, Jets corner back from Aliquippa--a small town north of Pittsburgh-- has devoted a lot of time and money into helping get the kids in his home town off the streets, out of gangs, away from drugs, etc. He speaks, donates time, and money. The local news talked about his charity, but also spent the same amount of time talking to his aunt's neighbors to find out how they feel about living next to a "Jets Fan" and how she has fun wearing her Jets jersey around town.

Maybe the idea of playing it forward would be a reality if we could only see, hear, or read about the good deeds of other...

Ok, now I'm off my soap box.

x 2

It's always uplifting to hear that people still care enough to help others.
