I saw a road kill on wy way home today and it made think of what I ran over a long time ago - While on my way home on a summer day after a rain I was not paying attention and ran over a smashed opossum on the road. I will never forget it, it was like riding over a wet carpet. It was pretty nasty and it slung the water on my leg.

Hope I didnt ruin supper or a snack.

When I was in junior high I ran over a snake as a slithered across the bike path, then promptly slammed on my rear brake in an attempt to rip it in half. Not one of my nicer moments.

We get the occasional road kill raccoons around here. During the summer months the smell can linger for what seems like weeks; it's been said before that in a car you smell it, on a bike you taste it- yada yada yada, we all get it... As far as strange goes, I ran over a spent .50 caliber bullet casing once. It caught my eye right as I was about to hit it; I'm surprised that I didn't see it from a hundred yards out being as big as it was. Right in the middle of town too. What do you shoot at with a Fifty in the short lines-of-sight of middle city America; besides helicopters?

Didn't run pver it but I barely avoided a muskrat. This isn't weird but my first day on my single speed I rode over a sewer drain and it killed both my tires, went back to examine it and the edges were almost razor sharp.

A few months ago I was riding on a bike path in town and a squirrel darted out from the tall grasses right in front of me. I didn't have any time to swerve or even think. I got him right on the neck with at least the front tire. Poor little guy

As an insurance agent I get to hear all kinds of strange stories, particularly about things people ran over with their cars. I had someone flip a van after hitting a 6' gator. I've had quite a few busted oil pans from armadillos. I've seen totalled cars from hitting dogs, pigs, and deer. But the worst damage I've ever seen from road debris was someone in a saturn that ran over a fire extinguisher. When that thing exploded it took out passenger floor board and seat as well as the entire front wheel assembly.
Funniest though was a duck. A friend of mine hit a duck, saw it but couldn't avoid it. The people in the car next to her kept pointing to her front end, she's keeps nodding and saying yes, sorry I killed a duck. Finally she pulls over to see what they're talking about. The poor duck is stuck in the grill still alive and quacking at her. She slowly made her way to a repair shop where they cut the duck loose. The duck fussed at them a few times then waddled back to the canal across the street...

Biggest was a raccoon slick (gooey) but the yuckiest was the squashed giant sewer rat -- except the tail that was still scaly and 3D. Creepy.

On the spring and summer mornings, it's impossible to avoid snails and slugs on MUPs. Dodge one and hit 3 others. The big snails are the worst. It's like hitting small plums covered with a shell. Bump, crunch and squish.

Forgot the mongoose I ran over in Hawaii... (Mongoose were introduced in Hawaii to kill rats. Rats are nocturnal, mongoose hunt by day. Now two infestations!)

Even though there's an equestrian trail right next to the MUP, plenty of horsemen walk on the pavement.

If I don't clean up after my dog, it's a $250 ticket; but somebody's hay-burner can let fly with a 10 pound heap of crap in the middle of the MUP and that's apparently just fine.

I often find myself in Amish country so road apples rank right up there. Nothing quite like cleaning horse crap off your downtube.

Lets see...various road kill, a live rattlesnake who I didn't see until it was too late (I stopped to check it out, he seemed alright), and a condom which thankfully didn't get stuck in my cassette.

I killed a bird on an MUP. He and two buddies were eating berries that has fallen onto the asphalt. His two buddies flew up as I approached, using their ability to fly to avoid the "predator" on the ground. He decided to fly low to the ground in front of me. I overtook him, his wing hit my front spokes and he was thrown under my wheels. I heard his final peep and felt myself roll over him. I went back to look and saw that I had ran over his neck and caused it to explode. I felt bad but chalked it up to natural selection. Using my pump, I pushed the poor dead fellow into the grass.

Ran over a snake on my MTB once. I was going pretty fast on a single track, and ran it over before I even had time to react. I didn't turn around or stop, if it was just injured and mad I didn't want to know.

OK - what have you hit while riding a bike.. I have hit rabbits, squirrels and possum. Almost hit Cow and a blind man during a race..

On my bike a smashed squirrel. I didn't know it was a squirrel till I was right on top of it. I thought it was just a dark patch on the road.

In my car, a catfish, a bunch of them.

A homeless person's bedroll. I was riding in New Jersey with another poster a few years ago, and he led me on an unfinished bike trail under a bridge. We went right through a tent city. I didn't have stopping room, so I rolled over someone's bedding. I was horrified and apologized. The man wasn't upset, which made me even more shocked.

A couple of pizza-squirrels. More disgusting than those actual hits, though, was a ride I was on this last summer, where I rode past a road-kill raccoon. It was being guarded by a buzzard that wouldn't give it up, regardless of how close the riders came to him/her. That was one ugly, ugly bird.

Heck, Gina ran over person and his bike!

I told this guy,"we're going left at the turn" he said "OK". Then at the turn I signaled but he went straight and hit my back wheel, went down then Gina rolled over him and his bike, she went down too (luckily in slow motion). In front of a cop sitting at the stoplight.

The worst things i ran over in a car was a swarm of crickets about ten miles worth at Dinosaur National Monument. Drove over five miles of nothing but crickets then had enough crunching and drove back over them

Yesterday I had to stop and let a chicken and a half dozen chicks cross in front of me in a local park. They're taking over the park. cute though...

There are times in Louisiana when the crawfish all cross the road at once. You don't want to drive through a herd of crawfish!
