Weight loss update: Bad news from a doc

So I've been grinding away and am now down to 229.

I'm already back up to 50 milers with 25 miles of running.

Total weekly mileage:
150 bike
25 miles running
2 hours on the rower

I went by the doc today and she gave me the bad news, sorta:

hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's disease

Pretty much my TSH levels are at 13.05 when they're suppose to be at 0.5-3.0.

So I am getting put on 0.05mg of Synthoid daily. Supposedly that will give me more energy, which has my wife terrified now based on my current workout load.

Ouch, did he tell you to scale it back a bit? Always listen to the doc, don't push yourself if it's too much and the exercise is going to hurt.

You will also drop weight. My mom has hypothyroidism and takes synthroid daily. I probably should get checked for it as well since it runs in her side of the family a little.

Take it easy till your body is used to the medicine...

Ye gods, man! Your going to be riding centuries and running marathons weekly, if you get any more energy!

That said, sorry to hear about the meds. Having to take pills sucks on general principles (GP's). Stay well...

This actually is GOOD news, you have a condition that can be treated, yeah it means being on pills, possibly for the rest of your life, but the condition causes weight gain, so get the condition under control and the weight loss should be a lot easier.

The other good thing is that levothyroxine/Synthroid doesn't really have much in the way of side effects. My wife's been on it for over a decade, and my old housemate has been on it for at least 15 years.

Both my parents, both my wife's parents, and my wife are on levothyroxin. It's the least troublesome of any of their maintenance medicines. Enjoy the extra energy.

Welcome to the Hashimoto's Club.
I've been on Syntroid 4 years now (150mcg), I still feel slightly run down(over)...but MUCH better than before.

That little thyroid can be evil. Good luck getting it all worked out!

runs in my family.....i've been on levothyroxine (50 mcg) for about 10 years...virtually no side effects. I didn't even know I needed it when it was first prescribed....just discovered it in the blood test.

If the doc says it'll help - I'll buy it. I picked her cause she came highly recommended by other athletes in the region. I do gotta admit I feel a little more smooth throughout the day energy-wise. Although I've concluded that may be more the placebo effect than anything.

On the other hand, I feel like I'm getting back to normal:

229 lbs., fitting into size 38.

I'm curious how I'll feel after these next two weeks with two major events coming up:

100 miler followed by a 10k the next day (Jalapeņo 100 in Harlingen) and then a 5k the next weekend; and now instead of just riding the 13 mile leg of a triathlon on March 3 I'm now being informed they won't be doing it because they have various nonsensical reasons () - so I went ahead and just signed up for the whole kitandkaboodle. So that means I've added a sprint tri on the back end.

Busy, busy, busy...too bad they don't have a clyde category for any of the events I have over the next 3 months.
