Just Plain Hard

I live in Banner Elk and if you are not familiar that is where Lance trained when he was coming back from cancer. When I ride out of my garage every road leads to a mountain. This is good for most but being a few pounds into the clyde category really makes any ride a monumental effort. What I would give for a nice flat Eastern NC ride.

Ah, but I'm sure it's very pretty.

The wife wants to go back to Asheville for a long weekend soon.

Flat is boring. The hills are the place to be! Gear your bike appropriately, keep your heart rate out of the "red zone", learn to enjoy the increased calorie burn on the way up the hill... and the gravity-assist rush on the way back down.

Flat roads are great. You get to enjoy the head winds.

While I agree with you that hills are hard, especially when your not conditioned for it, if life wasn't hard, what fun would it be?

+1,000

Hills are where it's at! Nothing is more fun and burns more useless fat than hills. Yes, the suffering is part of the fun for the twisted ones like me

It's just hard cause you think it's hard. We live in a similar situation, right outside is Mt Baldy which is considered Southern California's most difficult climb according to this book "The Complete Guide to Climbing by Bike In California" by John Sommerson. My wife rides in the area and so do several other Athenas. I'm more than above a few pounds of the Clyde minimum weight and I ride there too.

Mtn in the background "aren't" the big mtns in the area.

Wife riding hills ( the flatter area of where we live)

Now this is the wife in the big mountains. It's not as hard as you think so quit thinking, just do it!

Taking your bike for a walk up a hill is good exercise too.

Yes, I do live in paradise. Ski 3.5 months out of the year and ride my bikes the rest of the time. I own a mountain bike but much rather ride my road bike. My goal for 2011 is to lose 75 pounds hopefully I will like the climbs better. The scenery is beautiful and gives me something to look at when I have to stop so that my heart doesn't jump out of my throat.

Beanz, those are some awesome pictures. Thinking about sending my kid to snowboarding camp in Colorado this summer. I hope I can ride above the treeline there. That view is killer.

Sounds like you need to slow down or perhaps change the gearing on your bike?

Hello

Have you tried putting slick tires on the mtb, and using that gearing to build hill legs? I have done that before, and still do, especially when the hill is harder then my road bike will allow.

My wife was from Boone. You really don't have much choice but which way up when you start out, do you?

That said, my daughter and I rode across the country a couple years back. Virginia was mostly fun. Then I was ever so ready to get out of hauling me, bike, and load up Kentucky mountains, then out of Missouri mountains, then out of Kansas hills, then --

then I did. That was really tough! Instead of half an hour climbing, then coast for a while, we had to pedal ALL the time. It's a different kind of fitness. But after a couple of days, I was wishing for some hills just so I could take a break!
