Actually I'd race for pride. I've had othe riders challenge me on big rides. I love a timed event cause there are no if's and's or butt's about it.

One guy I mentioned the (185 lb guy). He challenged me to do a ride. We did, he took off fast but I caught up 15 miles later on the 60 mile climb. Later in the ride he whined that I was drafting him up the climbs. which I don't consider riding side by side drafting. I was holding back conserving energy. After he started whining, I dropped him and beat him by 10 minutes.

So after the ride he continued to whine saying I only kept up cause I used him to pace. He said we have to do this again without my drafting.

I trained for the next year even better. We did our own thing and I beat him by an hour and ten minutes!

So I'd race for pride but the only thing is, it's hard to find partners serious enough to do so. I'd train all year only to find out they stopped 2 weeks in. and me, I'd rather eat my lasagna than train year round for a race based on a personal challenge that won't happen.

I know, I would too! Plus taking away someone's pride is much more fun than taking their money
