I got passed by an old guy on roller blades!

So, I finished adjusting my seat, got back on my bike and the chase was on! I caught up with him about a mile down the road, and I could see he was starting to tire, so I poured on the speed finally passed him and was off. I was feeling pretty good about myself when about 15 minutes later he passed me again, so I poured the coal on again and kept up with him for about a 1/4 mile and them he dropped me like a bad habit. I am used to being passed by other Roadies, but roller blades??? Do they make motorized roller blades???

No worries, it has been done to me as well, and I couldn't catch the guy.

The skaters name... Eric Heiden! Oh yea, I rode with him the day before, on bikes..
I couldn't keep up with him on those either. LOL!

All in all a very nice guy.

My goal is to be one of those old guys passing the young whipper snappers. Its another reason why I ride. I always see all these old guys riding bikes, it's a life extender.

I think I used to have a girl-crush on him back in 1979 or 1980 during the Olympics. Memories!

A friend of my parents got me an autographed postcard of him years ago. I still have it.

He is a great rider, as well as a skater.
Founder of the 7-11 US based pro cycling team.
As well as a super nice guy, but I am told he was an SOB when in a race.

I get passed by rollerblades AND roller skis. Generally, the roller blades are younger people. Roller skis are older men usually training up for a HUGE ski-race they have every March here in Sweden.

Don't under estimate the pace those guys can do - I was riding with a couple, as in guy and gal, a few weeks back and they were speeding along at about 40kmph (25mph).

A few weeks back my wife and I got passed by a yound kid on a skateboard. I was devastated! I finally got over it by telling myself it was only a fun recreational ride with my hunny.

I am resolved to accept that everyone can and will pass me at some point. I will wave them all on with a smile.

This reminds me of a story in 'Cycle World' magazine many years ago, when motorcycles were my thing. The article was about one of their staffers, a middle-aged guy with many years of riding motorcycles, going to a dirt-track and racing against the local talent, a bunch of 12-14 year olds. He ends up getting absolutely skunked by the kids, in fact, in his words, they were laughing at his lines and braking hard enough to make Kool-Aid shoot out of their noses.

The article ended with this sentence, " Even the fat kid beat me........ but I did have him looking over his shoulder a time or two.."
