Hi again :)

So I very much want to upgrade from my '03 Giant Sedona ST. The LBS closest to me, and that I like, is a Giant/Cannondale/Specialized dealer, so I'm sticking with those brands. So far, I've test ridden the Giant Cypress DX, which I LOVE. I'm going to test ride a few others, but wanted to see if other Clydes had recommendations on the durability/suitability of any of them for a 356 pound shrinking 6' Clyde.

First, the Giant Cypress DX is a 2011 model, priced at $489.

Biggest pro for me is the adjustable suspension, to make it less suspensiony. I also like the trigger shifters, but not enough to make or break the deal either way. Not a fan of the color. The salesman says it has a stronger hub, but I'm not sure from looking at Giant's site - both the DX and regular Cypress have the same specification on the hub.

Next, Giant Cypress is a 2010 model, priced at $369

Love the color, love the price. Don't mind the grip shifters. Really, my concern here is based on the salesman's comments on the hub, and if it's truly not as strong. Also wonder about the fork. Will be riding soon...but the attractive price means I could probably pick up a trainer as well to get some indoor practice during bad weather.

He also suggested I try the Globe Carmel 03, also priced at $369

Good price, and has the adjustable front suspension. Single wall rims, though, and he again said weaker hub. Color is black, which I can live with. Not familiar with Globe, but as a sub-brand of Specialized I'm assuming it's a decent ride. Opinions?

Last, the Cannondale Adventure, also priced at $489

Not in stock at my local store, but at one of their other branches, can test if need be. Really don't know much about it.

OK, obviously the one that feels best is the way to go, but my real question is coming down to the quality/durability differences between the $369 bikes and the $489 bikes. Thoughts?

To me it seems like you would be upgrading your current bike to something already very similar. Is there a problem with the Giant Sedona? Do you just want the suspension seatpost and fork?

Basically you should get a bike you enjoy riding and that fits. However it looks like you want a similar bike to the one you are currently riding and I don't understand why?

I am looking at a similar bike, it's true. Part of it is that I prefer the aluminum frame. Part is that I prefer the 700c wheels. I also prefer the saddle, seatpost, and fork on the others. I was going to just upgrade the Sedona, but by the time I get a new saddle, tires, seatpost, tune-up, etc, I figured I'm just as well off buying a new bike - which I do have the budget to do. I'm trying to move from almost the right bike to the right bike :). I still know it won't be the last....

All the hubs appear to be no-name generics. I wonder if there's really that much difference between them...

The only fork brand I recognize is the one on the Cypress DX, and it's not a high-end name. I, personally, wouldn't buy a suspension fork that didn't have a lock-out feature and I tend to think that inexpensive suspension forks are a mistake for Clydes. The ones I've test-ridden always seem to be energy-robbing pogo sticks! For a hybrid, I'd prefer a rigid fork and room for wide (ex: 700x35 or larger) tires.

In terms of other components, they're a bit of a mixed bag but I'd probably pick Cannondale as having the best component mix and the Cypress DX as a close #2. In my case, I hate twist shifters so I'd probably buy the Cypress DX if forced to choose. My own taste would run more toward the Specialized Sirrus, since I'm not a fan of suspension forks...

Cool, thanks for the opinion. They carry the Sirrus as well, I'll add it to my list of bikes to try when I'm there.

Do you absolutely need the suspension? A non-suspension bike would be lighter and feel livelier. Suspension systems always eat a little of your pedalling energy.

+1 skip the suspension. Not only do they rob your pedaling energy they also become dangerous if you use the front brake (is there another one) agressively the front squishes and gets squirly. I doubt that it would be enough to send you over but it droped my son like a bad habit. I also don't understand why you would want to ride an unforgiving, buzzing allum bike. I preach this a lot on this and other forums, and I am sure I am more sensitive to it then some, but allum bikes buzz. They are herd on your wrists and are not an upgrade vs steel.

If you're riding an aluminum bike with an aluminum fork on skinny (700x28 or smaller) tires, I'd agree with you.

But, if you install a carbon fiber fork or run wider tires (like the bikes the OP is considering) aluminum can be just as comfortable as steel. My touring bike, for example, uses an aluminum frame and 700x35 tires. I guarantee you couldn't feel the difference between my bike and the steel equivalent. I should know: I hate buzzy aluminum road bikes with a passion!

$489 retail to $750 retail seems like a pretty big jump... If you're going to go that high, I'd add the Specialized Sirrus Elite Disc, the Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc (if you need suspension), and probably a few others to the mix.

I'm looking for a more upright ride - Looking to stay in comfort bike territory. Also, that's too far over budget.

All those bikes look similar. I don't think you would notice a difference in the components that much.

Both Giants look very similar, but if you trust your salesman's comment about the hub, and that's a sticking point for you get the 2011. But i tend to agree with sstorkel that they are both generic.
