As I continue to lose weight I have noticed how much easier it is to ride in the drops. It feels good if for no other reason than to change body position (hands, etc). I know it is more aerodynamic but I wonder if otherwise it is more efficient?

Mary climbs in the drops. She says she gets more power on the pedals...
Me, I'm getting to where I can pedal efficiently on the drops, but my drops, well... they're rather high up...

"Elevated Drops". Call them that and it sounds advanced or technical.

UPDATE: This starts THIS COMING Saturday and because of me being out of town I'm going to miss 4 days. Still doable but above anything I've done on the bike yet. The new miles per day needed will be 27.19. I know I won't be doing that each day so I'll have to get ahead of the curve right away. And as I stated elsewhere I don't want to just rack up the miles (that's good as well) but I want to do ride more and ride consistently. I'm doing "ok" at that now but I want to do better.

"Success" for me will be to get on the bike as much as I can and not fail to get out because of weak excuses.

"Ultimate Triumph" for me will be to achieve the below challenge without doing a bunch of large rides to get there.

"True Love" is the greatest thing, in the world-except for a nice MLT - mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. - Miracle Max

This seems to be a bit of cream-puff goal to associate Eddy Merckx to but for me it is something that I feel I can do if I bear down.

I have to decided if I am going to do it in big chunks or if I'm going to try and actually do 21.748 miles per day. I think what I'm going to try and accomplish is 25 miles per day which will build a small cushion for days I don't get out. I'm sure in there I'll throw in a longer ride but I would rather have the consistency of getting out.

"A bunch of large rides" mightn't be a bad idea. Mixing up your training by doing some longer rides at endurance pace would add variety to the shorter, more intensive rides you've been doing and you might notice some benefits.

How about sticking with 20 miles a day and throw in a metric century on the weekends when free time allows to give you a little of a cushion for the days you miss? One day at a time...

Speaking of which, I'm not going to be officially part of the Strava challenge since I have no way to record my rides, but I'm using the idea as further motivation to get out to ride and plan to start out ahead with my first solo century this Saturday...assuming my LBS has a set of tires in stock as I've noticed this morning my stock ones are shot. I abused the heck out of them by going off curbs and riding off road, so I'm not too surprised they only lasted ~2500 miles. I'm considering a pair of 700x28 gatorskins for flat protection and less rolling resistance on the roads but also should be safe off-road (limestone/gravel trails).

I tried 32's gators when I attempted the 200k. Didn't feel as much difference as I thought I would. Put the 38 Marathons 420 front, Plus on rear after a couple slide outs in rain once and crud washed onto road by storms. Next spring I might try vaunted Paselas for the next 200k attempt.

I'm not up for a mileage challenge of such a degree. However, seeing you guys makes me kick it up a notch. Took upcoming Friday off originally to do a "easy" solo century, but invited Mary, then she got sick!

So Century is put off until Sunday, we'll meet at the American Tobacco Trail Friday and do a couple laps.. Rise donuts and coffee for breakfast and pizza and beer for lunch!
So might get around 150 in 3 days!

In threads where drops and flat bars are discussed, there's a general consensus that drops are much more comfortable especially when riding distances, because of all the available hand positions. I know we don't think of "comfort" as something that's "efficient", but on a longer ride it can be.

Exactly. It has the same effect on me - if I am starting to get heavy again I just come to this forum, and specific threads like this, and see how these people have gotten healthier and lost the weight and it automatically encourages me to do the same.

I am probably going to have to follow your advice of 20 a day and then a longer ride to fill in the miles per day missed. It's probably what is achievable and still allows me to be consistent.

As far as Strava I don't know if it allows you to just type in a workout with no GPS but I'd look into it.

I like the gatorskins I've had in the past.

Agreed! I'm starting to do that more. Also I developed a bit of pain and slower and longer rides are doing it good while more intense rides are bothering it. I'm going to ease off the intense for a bit and let thing heal up.

On my 100 miler last year if I was more efficient I would not have hurt as much so I believe it.

For you and anybody else that has a need for weight loss, energy, recovery, etc. I'd love to share what I'm doing. Heck it would be awesome to get about 5-10 of us on a video session to share and improve.

Jens Voigt will, in three hours, attempt to break the UCI record of distance traveled in one hour by bike. Some rule changes have occurred which should allow Jens to zoom past the record. He is hoping to set this mark using the new rules in hopes that it will cause some excitement and others will jump on it and shortly surpass him.

Here is an article with links at the bottom to watch the attempt live and learn more: Guercilena: Voigt?s style under pressure means he?ll lose some metres, but we are confident | CyclingTips

Thanks for the tip on the Gatorskins. I found a spare tube in my toolbox so I never made it to the LBS but I know for a fact that it was my last tube so I'm planning a trip this weekend for sure. I'm thinking about going from 35s to 28s so I'm convinced I'd see at least a little bit of difference, I'm not exactly keen on giving up the tread though as my road is 1mile of gravel so I'm unsure how slicks would react in that case.

I was hoping to do my first century even if it took me 8 or 12 hours to complete this Saturday but looking at the forecast it looks like mother nature has different plans. Sunday looks just as bad so another weekend shot from what I can tell right now.

Thanks for your opinion on the gatorskins, I see they're highly preferred for the most part on this forum. Personally I'd take durability over a 1 or 2 mph speed difference. As long as I'm not sitting on the side of the road every 50-100 miles changing a flat, I'd be satisfied.

I checked with Strava, they do have an option to add rides manually but for the challenges, or at least this one, the rules specifically indicate no manual entries. Oh well, I get enough motivation on this forum to ride and don't need to create another account. Besides I was going to consider it as a personal goal just as reason to get out to ride since as the weather gets cooler, I know I'm going to start getting lazy and make excuses not to ride.

I don't care about the little badge you get on Strava but the organized goal was they key. Like you it is a reason to make a push for a period of time.

I have two hunting trips coming up. On each of those I am not as careful on my eating as I normally am. I'm trying to get ahead of the curve so when I come out of them I am not too far behind. Of course I could get "ahead of the curve" and then not eat like a foolish hog but what fun would that be?

Awesome. The riding season seems to be winding down for most... I'm likely going to hit 50 or maybe even more tomorrow with my former co-worker. It'll likely be his last ride of the year as he's a bit of a wimp when it comes to cooler temperatures. My daughter and I will probably fit in one last metric together along the towpath next weekend before I prep her bike for winter storage. After that my rides up to the first snowfall will all be solo. I love riding on bike paths this time of year, i experience very little traffic - the bike clubs and usually rude racers are done for the year and the only ones left are casual riders/commuters like myself.

I'm also prepping for wuss weather. Getting an area in my basement setup with a screen so I can distract myself while on my trainer. I'm not a big tv watcher but during the Winter I'll catch up on somethings while spinning.
