Depends alot on the legs, lungs terrain, and currently for me, my butt. If you haven't been riding much, even if you stay within your own fitness level, contact points can be a problem. Stop, allow yourself to feel good. Keep going, and don't berate yourself.

I really try to not stop on my rides. Granted, they are not overly long right now 10-20miles. However, I do find that even a minute off the bike helps rejuvenate my legs and I feel better. I know when I did my longest ride last year (39 miles) I did stop 2 times and it really did help.

Flats - no, unless I think I missed a turn and need to check Google Maps.

Climbs - if heart rate starts to hit 200, I stop. Unless I see the summit, then I push and take a break at the summit. I always take a break at the summit if the climb is categorized on mapmyride.com.

On flat rides, no unless I find something in the road (money, tools, etc.) or there's something worth taking a picture or video of. I always carry a real digital camera for that reason. Phone is only a backup camera.

On climbs I always push hard, so if it's a really tough steep climb or a mountain pass I stop at the top for a minute or two, especially if I want to take a picture of the view from the top.
