I did it!

A small accomplishment, but one that I have never done before.

This past weekend was a very large organized ride called the California Classic Weekend here in the Central Valley. They had three organized rides a mini-metric (35miles) a metric and a full century. Being a noob and not having a lot of miles under my belt I signed up for the mini-metric last month. Previous to the ride my longest ride had been 10 miles.

Saturday morning rolled around and with the company of a friend who is a CAT3 we headed off at 7:00 with around 1500 other cyclists. The exciting part of the ride consisted of being able to ride a 10 mile stretch of a freeway. This was a history making event in California as there had never been a closure of a freeway for cyclists! I'm also happy I pedaled my 348lb self for 35 miles! This is just the first of many more miles to come!

Only one word,

GREAT!

I remember the first time I did 30 miles! It could have
been the Tour De France and I would have not been
happier!

In fact the first time I did ten it was like I had won
the Nobel prize for cycling.

Cool! What was the ride like? How much harder than going 10 miles?

It was tough. There were not any hills per say so that was nice. There were a few grades on the freeway that were more rolling hills. I figured I would be dead after the ride but I wasn't. I came home took an hour nap and was back out working as a course marshal for the Criterium that my friend was racing in. I think if I would have had to done it solo it would have been tougher than it was. It's energized me to no end in knowing that I can do it. I'm ready for the next one.

There were some sad notes to the ride.

On the century there were two riders that went down, one of them sadly passed tonight from massive head injuries. Both riders went down at approximately the same place, at different times. The first to go down sustained a fractured cheek bone, broken scapula, 8 broken ribs, punctured lung, etc. The other was a 29yr old woman. Details have been sketchy on her accident but it was bad enough that her helmet shattered.

Great job.:thumb:

Must have been fun to fly down the freeway sans auto mobiles and trucks.

Sorry to hear about the two riders who had accidents.

Condolences to them, their family and friends.
