Coming back to the fold

Hey gang. I've been gone for quite some time, but I'm back. I've had some health issues that I needed to address. I was feeling pretty rough for sometime last spring and messed around and almost waited too long to deal with it. Last Sept. I went to the Dr and we discovered that I was Type 2 Diabetic!!!

So the starting stats were: 47 years old, 330# @ 6'4", A1C was 13+ and fasting was 389!

Now: 48 years old, 278# (52# lighter!!), A1C is 6.2 and fasting this morning was 91.

I also found I had a thyroid problem and with pills and diet the above stats were achieved. I feel so much better now.

I haven't touched the bike in over a year, but this week it's going to the shop for a tune-up and new tires and is my next weapon against this hurdle.

Tentative goal: lose another 50# and do a half-century by 2012!!!!!

It's good to be back.

That is great! How did you get the diabetes under control?

Doc says I was pretty lucky. I'm Type 2 Insulin resistant. She put me on Metformin, the most common meds. And I did something most diabetics do not do, at least in my area, I listened to my Dr!!!!!

Massive diet change. Low carbs, NO SUGAR, lotsa water and veggies. Baked or grilled fish 3 times a week, lean red meats and chicken/no skin. 2500 calories per day and a daily walk of 1.75 miles or 30 mins.

I've stayed off the bike until now to get my head around the neuropathy in my feet and legs. I now have a great pair of crosstraining shoes that fit the way shoes are supposed too, but I'm worried I won't find a pair of cycling shoes that fit this way, so I maybe riding with just regular shoes.

That is great, congratulations. I just got the results and my dr is on vacation this week so I haven't gone in for the full consult yet, but I have already started the diet change and riding more consistently. Hopefully I will be able to copy your feat.
