    Specialized expediton sport

    Hello
I posted in here a few weeks ago about wanting to buy a bike and my budget was $500. Well, my truck had other plans for that $500 and now my budget is about $100. I've been talking to a guy about a bike I found on craigslist, it's a 2001 specialized expedition sport. Does anyone have any experience with this bike, or specialized bikes in general, and is $100 a good deal. He's sent me a few pictures and the bike appears to be in good condition. Any information you can give me is appreciated. Thanks

I love Specialized as a company and I believe they make great bikes.

I had one of the original Expeditions (bought in 1992) for 20 years. It was a classic touring bike. The Sport was a cross between a touring and road bike. Steel frame if I remember, probably has some old Shimano drive shaft, 7 speed with a double? Not certain it came in a triple. A good friend of mine rode a Sport for about 6 years until he got a custom bike. For $100 you can't not go wrong. Just make sure its the right fit for you and if its possible to upgrade if necessary.

Which model is Expedition is it? The Elite is the really good one, with the Deore Rear Derailleur. I have a friend who has the bike and absolutely loves it - the same year - has had it since it was new and never had a problem with it. I have a couple of 90s Specialized bikes - rockhopper and a stumpjumper - they're nice bikes.

I have a 2004 Expedition Sport, which I rode happily and problem free for six years before relegating it to the cottage when I got a new in-town bike. I could have sold it, I guess, but I still like it a lot and it's nice to have on hand. The Expedition series we're talking about here is a comfort hybrid, not to be confused with the earlier touring bikes of the same name. If it's in decent shape, a 2001 would be well worth $100.

Thanks all for the replies. I'm happy to say that this bike is now mine. For a 10 year old hundred dollar bike it's in great shape. The guy said he bought it new in 2001, rode it for a while and just put it away. There isn't anything wrong with it, just a bit dusty. I just aired up the tires and rode it for about 4 miles today. I'll probably take it to a LBS and have them tune it up, but it rode just fine. I haven't been on a bike since someone stole mine in college about 10 years ago and it felt really good to get back on and ride.
