Climbing is for the Girls...Today on GMR (7/13)

A nice day on GRM today. It was dark and cool, couldn't ask for more on a summer day riding GMR. Totally escaped the heat. Well other than trying to keep up with Lauretta Fetta. She and fellow OCRebel Doug did an excellent job climbing GMR. Of course LF said she was slow and I'd have to wait for her. Right after that she dropped the hammer and worked me on the climb. Doug was a good climber and flew right up to the shack. Hillbasher rode with us too. I'm sure he'd agree that today was one of the best days for riding GMR. HB and I did the descent together and like always, stopped for some posing.

From the very start Lauretta asked for the camera to take some pics. Next thing I know, she's going for the recorder and doing interviews ha ha! That's cool, I can't always think of something to say so it's nice to have some help. She has little camera fun at the shack then we're off to the village. But not without trying to talk me into riding to the ski lifts. Hm, I'm not prepared but I make a deal, I'll go if HB goes. The entire time heading to the village I'm hoping HB has second thoughts, luckily he does and saves my butt. But I tell LF that when I get into shape, I'll hit the lifts with her. She says cool but when we ride again she says my butt is hers on the lifts ha ha!

Well Doug and LF head off to the lifts. Doug's not sure if he has the gearing but willing to give it a try. HB and I kick back at the park for a while then as we're ready to head out, we see the two heading to the lodge. Doug's gearing isn't enough so they cut it short then go to the lodge for lunch instead. We think about staying but HB has to be back for some sleep before another night of work. Like always, we do some sight seeing on the return.

Cool ride but that Lauretta was hammering on GMR. She's gotten very strong. No, there was no waiting, I was working my butt off to keep up with her!

At the village we see a dude picking up his mail. He's got a little Min-Pin. Little Mr. Paws was ready for some action! Dog was about 6 inches tall but thought he was 6 feet tall ha ha! HB strikes up some puppy conversation with the owner only to find out the little sucker chased a 300 pound bear up a tree. Then the dude turns to me and asks if I'm Mr Beanz. Yup, that's me! Turns out to be Ray Clone, one of the Ridge Riders. We have some good cycling chat and a couple stories then we're off. Well, Ray was going to Disneyland, we were going back up GMR ha ha! Plus, today was the day Lauretta celebrated her first bee sting!

Few more pics in my blog.

He's been putting them up in the Southern California Regional sub-forum. I too enjoy his videos and am looking forward to the day when he comes up along side me on a climb, ('cause I'll be going really, really slow).

Beanz, you do such a great job with your videos! This one turned out great! Calamari and I are looking forward to riding WITH you. He just said last night on the phone how he's barely gotten to talk to you more than the 10 minutes we saw you at SART. We'll definitely have to do a GMR day one of these days....IF we don't come out Saturday. We'll see...AC (Angeles Crest) IS calling, but I've got a saddle sore ouchie, so we gotta see how that heals.

Thanks for the great footage capturing the day!!!!! Awesome!!

It's from the blistering pace you set on GMR.

Thanks for the comp on the video.

Beanz, how do you manage to find all these friendly people in your videos? Up here in NorCal it seems like many people have their lycra in a bunch and my instincts tell me to not even attempt the conversations I see in your videos, let alone recording these people. Of course, I probably don't have the charisma you do.

Lots of different channels. It's funny because some approach me asking if I'm Beanz. Word of mouth. Quite a few people have been brought to me by other riders for introductions. But some, just noticing other riders listening in on our bike conversations. Some will join in, some I drag in!

There have been times that I see a real stuffy looking person giving us somewhat of a stink eye. When I see this, they're a Beanz target. It's almost inviting, to see if I can get them to talk ha ha!

I'll go really really slow with you. But like Lauretta said she'd be going slow then she punished me on the climbs.

I will be riding up with Alyce and Gina on Saturday morn. About 7am (Alyce has confirmed the ride but not the time as of yet). But nothing like the pace held by Lauretta. We will do a slow steady pace to the shack. Maybe 5 or 6 more if everyone feels good. Not sure of your conditoning but this may even be too slow.

I'd love to be there when that happens!

I don't think there will ever be word of mouth with me. I'm not (in)famous enough.

You'd b e surprised. I posted pics for 2 or 3 years in the SART thread (SoCal). I didn't think anybody paid attention to the posting, then one day on the trail I had a flat. Some dude rolled by and shouted, "got everything you need Mr. Beanz?"......... But I did post lots of pics of Gina too. So they recognized us when we were together. If I was alone, I got lots of funny looks like they knew me but weren't sure. The one thing that will keep you unidentified is the lack of your pics (but maybe that's what you're after). At first I didn't want to post any pics as I'm actually a shy person and figured I am far from the average looking cyclist. But once people get to know you, they really don't care. They like me for what's on the inside and not what I look like on the outside!........

Stuffy people? Yeah, it's funny. I grew up as a very quiet kid. My brother always spoke for me, big mouth and quite the politician. So when Gina and I started riding to the coast, we encountered lots of people that had more money than we ever did, not to mention the attitude. Our bikes were entry level, still are. I'd see these guys with $5000 bikes and the face to match. One dude used to lift his nose to us. So being a person that usually kept quiet, one day he turned his nose up as I nodded hello so I told Gina, "watch this!". I walked up to the dude and started talking bikes. He tried to cut it short but I asked question after question about his Colnago.

The next 3 times or so that we encountered the dude, I did the same thing. After that , he was actually pretty friendly. A couple of friends we had were surprised that he talked to me at all. I think he figured he didn't have choice ha ha! So when I got the recorder, I figured I'd use that experience to help me out. Most people are friendly but if there is a snot nose dude around, he's a target. And I haven't missed yet!

Great story! You should make a movie of the "Best of Beanz". From some of the stuff you've said, it would make me and many others
