Just for fun

Sometimes when you use a hobby for another purpose, like exercise or as a job, it can loose some of it's luster.

I have loved bicycles since I got my first Schwinn Predator as a child. It was just last year that I decided to really dive into it and use cycling for fitness and weight loss. Since then, I have acquired some very nice bikes, learned alot about maintenance. Not to mention the loss of 23 pounds and regaining a spring in my step.

The biggest problem I face now is that every time I bring a bike out, I feel like it has to be a long goal oriented ride in the zone that I can later brag to my wife about.

Well, yesterday I stayed in my plaid shorts and golf shirt, took out the 29er with platform pedals and gym shoes, cruised around the neighborhood and had an absolute blast! I hopped some curbs, I played on the stairs at the train station, I visited my LBS and hung out a while. I visited a friend's new Beagle pup.

I ended up riding about 6 miles, never going fast, never out of breathe, but had so much fun.

I think everyone should spend one day a week actually "playing" on their rig(s).

That's all I do.

I love my occasional leisurely rides with the spouse. We are going out in a few minutes. Even though my shoulder is in pain we go slow enough that I can ride one handed and sit up straight.

hahaha awesome post, i love it.

i do the same every day when i ride to work in the morning. I actually whistle and sing while riding only 8-9mph, i say good morning to everyone out walking the dog or walking to the train station.

I guess that's one good thing about all this flat ground around here. It's great for just cruising around. When I lived in the hills for 6 months there was no flat ground. I missed being able to just cruise around without a lot of effort.

My trikes are perfect for leisurely rides.

My wife and I like slow leisure rides on our mtn bikes when she rides with me. When I'm riding solo, I always ride my road bike with a mileage goal. But yeah I enjoy our once a week or so leisure rides.

So true. I had that epiphany this week when I was planning on a long ride to make sure I hit my mileage goal and as I'm getting ready my 11yr old daughter told me she wanted to go. So we go putting around the neighborhood, through the park, took breaks, etc. We were out for almost an hour and 1/2 and only did about 6.5 miles, but it was a blast.

Got to stop and smell the roses every now and then for sure.

Yep yep - I actually bought a cheap single speed flat-bar on sale at Performance a couple months ago specifically so I'd ride for fun more. At the time I hadn't been doing any riding at all, and my young kids couldn't understand why I usually didn't want to go with them around the neighborhood. So the single speed hangs out with their bikes in the garage, ready to go when they are - doesn't matter what's on my feet or butt, no expectations whatsoever. I love it. And at least partly as a result I've also put in 150+ miles this month on the other bike and am making progress toward losing the 60 lbs I've put on since I stopped riding a few years ago...

Last weekend I decided to take a tour around the city I live in... something I had never actually done before.

64 miles and almost 200 pictures:

It was quite an enjoyable experience.
