My b-dy present - 1 week early

My wife told me earlier today that when she got home from work (I work remote 3 days a week) that she wanted to go out. "Be ready" is what she said...

So when she arrived home, she asked if I was ready and said we needed to take the truck because she had too much stuff in her car (more on that later).

Get in the truck and back out and ask where we are going, she said to get my b-day present...

So we head over to the LBS and I kind of knew what I wanted but talked to the guys at the shop and they agreed...Trek Navigator 1.0 for my size and what I want to do in the next year or so. I got on it and it felt a little high (21" frame) but he adjusted the seat post, checked the air pressure in the tires and told me to give it a try. I give it ride around the parking lot and everything is right in my world again. It has been over 18 years since I was last on a bike and I MISSED IT!!

So we load it in the truck and bring it home...I give it a quick ride around the neighborhood and by the time I get home, my legs are jelly. I don't know exactly how far I went but getting a feel for the bike and cycling through the gears to get an idea of how it shifts and just see overall how each feels and how much pedaling I have to do.

Headed out to get a melon protector and a hacksaw...that was the caveat. B-day present comes early and I get to install a new closet system into one of the closets in the a spare bedroom...

Well there are trade-offs everywhere and this is just one of them.

As of today, starting out @ 325lbs (compared to 500 lbs at this time last year) - looking forward to accelerating my weight loss via riding. Plenty of parks and trails for me to explore (paved) around here and it will only get better as it moves into autumn.

Very nice. It's been a while since I've seen Navigators discussed on here. Good bikes for paths and such.

I missed that. He's in Delaware, about 40 miles from me.

Hey, we need to meet for a ride when you are ready!

And voila! I got my road bike almost a year ago, and when I test drove it, a big smile broke out across my face. Really, it was so much fun that I couldn't contain my joy. That feeling hasn't worn off 11.25 months later. Methinks you're going to love your bike; the way you described it is a very good omen.

You can get a bike computer ( speedometer, odometer, and other stuff ) for $15 if you shop around, or more if you want it to make coffee. They're really nice to have.

Happy birthday!

happy!

Happy Birthday. You will enjoy the Navigator. My wife and I bought them last year and cycling has become a great way to lose weight and spend time together.

Thanks for the well wishes!
Neil_B - I'll let you know when I build up some distance and then we can ride...

I did take it out again last night and forgot I had downloaded a distance GPS app for my phone - so when I got to where I wanted to go halfway, I turned it on and made my way back.
https://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/44315068

So if you look at this, double it....basically 1.84 miles on my 2nd day on the bike @ 11 MPH on avg.
There is a park across the street from me with a 2+ mile paved trail - my goal is to get it there and around by the weekend

Also picked up an adjustable water bottle holder and a camelbak 25 oz insulated bottle for when I spend more than 15 minutes from the house!

Did a slightly longer ride last night
https://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/44610838

Tomorrow morning I am crossing the highway and heading to the county park with it's 2.26 mile paved path. My goal is to lap it twice and ride back and forth from home as well.
Then I need to mow the lawn!

Good job! So how did this morning's ride go? Did you make it across to the park?

Yes, let us know.

BTW, phlydude, it looks like I passed within a few miles of you in 2009:

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...a-Winding-Road

Sunday morning I lingered a little when packing my campsite. This was the last time I'd pack up this trip. As I rolled out of the campsite I headed to the pond the park is named for. I'd seen Nature up close for much of this trip, and I was entering the most densely populated part of Delaware. Standing on the boat landing at Lums Pond was a "goodbye", or more accurately "till we meet again." The waves lapped at the edges of my cycling shoes.

Then off to breakfast in the last small town I'd see this trip. I had French toast at Kildare's general store/post office as folks on the their way to and from church stopped in. I didn't know which of us was more uncomfortable in the early morning heat, me in my Lycra or the churchgoers in their suits and dresses.

Traffic was light as I turned right onto a road that took me to Rt. 9.......
