Just got into cycling in the last two months and really enjoy it. I've been riding on platform pedals and am ready to make the jump.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out the correct size for the different shoe companies with the LBS (they're very helpful but don't sell my size shoes often).

I wear a 14 US in most shoes - sperry, dress shoes, adidas, etc. and a 15 US in Nike.

We've been looking at Mavic and Shimano options. Does anyone have experience with the sizing of these shoes?

I measured my foot on a piece of paper today and it's 307 or 308mm.

Ask the LBS if you can order shoes and not buy them if they don't fit. Go to the mfgrs site and look at their size chart and order what they recommend. Yes, different company's shoes often are sized strangely. You can also go to other stores to check their stock and try on shoes. If you find something that fits you can always go back to your LBS and order it.

I take a 13 and couldn't find anything locally, so I ended up doing mail order. Puts a heck of a load on your card! I ordered three pairs of shoes in different sizes, tried them on in the house, and sent the other two back.

Later I ordered some shoes from the LBS, once I knew my size.

I know nothing about Shimano shoes, except they apparently don't make them bigger than 47 (about 11), and nothing at all about Mavic. I really like Sidi Dominators (MTB), except for the price. Pearl Izumi is a bit less, but still pretty good. Both Sidi and PI make shoes up to 50, at least.

Try looking at Lake shoes or Sidi.

I wear 14 EEE and can find shoes that work from either.

Thanks. The local store will do that. They're ordering the Mavic Avenir's for me. Their size chart matches exactly with my foot size, so we'll see how it goes.

47 is a size 12. Sidi's make shoes in size 52.

+1 for Zappos. They've got several pairs listed in 14 and have free shipping both ways. They have a couple of Shimanos available up to 52 (US16), so you should have other options no matter what the LBS has to offer.

Don't get too hung up on what the conversion charts say about Euro/US equivalencies. It's still a crapshoot, at least until you gain some familiarity with a particular manufacturer's typical sizing. I wear either a 12 or 11.5 in US sizing, depending on the make of the shoe, and I've had Euro sized shoes that range from 44 to 47, again, depending on the make. The best you can do is get some in hand to try on, whether that's through your LBS or by ordering/returning from a web source.
