numb hand...

hello everyone after my ride yesterday my pinky and ring finger on my right hand are numb feeling lol ride was about 30 miles and was wondering if this was because of a pinched nerve or something of the sort just find it kinda weird ... thanks

Pinky and ring finger going numb can be a sign of a pinched Ulnar Nerve. Can be caused by a lot of things from fit to hand position to a problem with the nerve itself. I had to have an Ulnar Transposition (an incision made to the inside of the arm so that the nerve could be physically re-located) about five years ago. Mine was non- cycling related, though. Get your fit checked.

Also, if you're wearing gloves when you ride and the gloves have thick padding in the palm, that could be causing your problem.

appreciate the response i believe the fit would be the issue i normally wear gloves but yesterday i did not, i have a Haro Amos flatbar "hybrid" bike all i can afford at the present time but now that ive lost 50 lbs might be time to get fitted for a real RB especially for longer rides ... like i said thanks !

If you want, I have a ton of links to help you understand what is going on with your hand. You can google cyclist's palsy, that's a name the condition commonly goes by. Once I realized what was going on with my hand position in the various places I put them, from the tops to the hood to the bends to the drops, it was easy to see how I was putting pressure on the ulnar canal. The padding on my gloves did not help, either, as it was pushing into that canal. Anyway, if you catch it quickly and adjust fit, sit and hand placement you can correct the issue. Just make sure you pay attention to how your hand feels, because at least for me, it was natural to just put my hands in improper positions without really thinking about it.

thank you NS solid advice seeing as i only have flats atm any recommendations on hand position? I do my best to redistribute my weight more to my rear but then my back starts hurting IDK i believe a correct bike fitting would do me right.. when i went to the LBS i purchased my bike based on "sturdyness" rather than comfort being i was 290 lbs. back then and was scared i would break anything i got on .... now i ride alot more for alot longer distance and am feeling more discomfort now then i was back then, I do need to see a doc. about the numbness tho and yes any links on the subject would help, a quick google search turned me to wiki lol to find out what nerve you guys were talking about lol

Don't be afraid to change your handle bars, your seat , your seat post, your stem to get the bike dialed into "you". These things are all really cheap to buy.

IMO, most bike today have a set of generic flat bars or drops that are really right for no one. In fact, I think it's an insult to the customer base to force them to ride crappy bars and seats.

+1
I can't wear most cycling gloves for this reason and usually don't wear any on the road and use plain Mechanics gloves for mountain biking.
But I found a pair of castelli's in the bike shop on Friday that have very little padding and so far they seem to be ok.

I always get numbness with flat bars, so switch out to sweptback bars; my wrists are more in line with my arms.

i just did a lot of biking this weekend and i got worried because there is a slight numbness in my pinkie. i was hoping that it wasn't a circulation problem , but after seeing this thread and reading up on cyclists hand, it sounds like i might have slightly pinched my ulnar nerve.
