Your eye-opening moment?
 
So this is the Clyde forum. A vast majority of us are trying to lose weight. I'm curious to see what your "eye opening" moment was, however. What happened to you that one day made you decide to lose weight?

For myself, it was the "Severe medical emergency", which resulted in hospitalization. There was a fire in my apartment complex, and when the paramedics checked everyone out afterward, I had a skyrocketing blood pressure of over 200. They hospitalized me, and that was when I finally opened my eyes and decided to change my life for good.

Was having some health issues, did a bunch of tests, turns out it was all stress related but didn't know it at the time.

However after the tests my doctor said the words "pre-diabetic" and it got my attention.

My back hurt when I would walk. My back hurt when I was in bed. I would lie down on the bed on my side and feel the weight of my self. I was done with it.

Just after my wife found out we were expecting our second child, I decided I didn't like being almost 250, I bought some 10# dumb bells, and started exercising with them. I can't believe how hard it was for me to even lift those things over my head back then. I eventually got a weight bench, and at one time benched 240. Then I had lost too much weight (got down to 210) and lost my gall bladder. I eventually wound up back in the 230 range, and can't shake it. I am a heck of a lot stronger, and even this year I have gotten a fair bit faster on my bike, but I can't shake the weight, and aside from the main scale I use, I am told I am even heavier, at almost 250. (Dang it though, the Wii says 235, the other scales are 245, but everyone else in the family matches between them. Then again... I don't trust scales much, I once had one say I had gained 2 pounds after using the bathroom. I should have been lighter, not heavier.)

My choice was: Encouraged by someone who was concerned about your weight (friend/family) with a little side note. The delivery of the statement could have been put a little differently. Essentially one of my friends told me that "Mike you're eating all this healthy food and not losing any weight" I looked back at pictures and this definitely lit a fire underneath me and motivated me to actually do better with my nutrition and also work on my exercise regiment.

Even though it wasn't the way that I wanted to hear it, that was probably the best thing that he could have said to me. It hurt enough to motivate me to do what I knew I needed to do. As it stands currently, I have lost 77.6 lbs and am now 212.8. I acted on my friend's comment for the first time in Feb. I am trying very diligently to keep the proper tracking of my diet and exercise. I know that calorie counting doesn't work for everyone, but it definitely worked for me.

I was 534 pounds and merely walking to the bathroom was a workout, it was only a matter of time at that weight before my heart Grenaded..... I came to the conclusion that an early death was not an option for me with a 2 year at home and I am right around 200 pounds lighter than when I began as I type this.

Went for check-up. Had borderline high blood pressure. I made him check it again (I never have high BP). Same result. I had once been a cyclist, but that was 12 non-active years previous. Got back on 6 years ago, BP's nice now, and haven't stopped since.

My joints were hurting, and doctors could not pinpoint the cause. Rheumatologist told me to get out there and exercise, lose weight, and my pain should get better. She was right, having high blood sugar and cholesterol levels, combined with stress & depression, was causing joint pain.

I checked 2 boxes because 1 of them only half applies: I am happy being a Clyde, even though I lost a bunch of weight. I'm going to stay a Clyde because at 6'6" it's unlikely I'll lose much more weight and drop below that 200 pound mark.
I checked the "other" because I lost weight for a couple reasons; some was to get back to where I was before my post-surgical weight gain, and the rest was to get down to a reasonable racing weight after being invited onto a local team.

For me it all started back in the beginning of may. A week before my daughters communion I had to get a new suit and when they measured my waist, it was the biggest my waist has ever been. I jump on the scale and I saw the largest numbers I ever saw (in the 290's). A week after my daughters communion I decided it was time for a change. I didn't want to do some silly "diet" but actually make a lifestyle change, and i did. So far I have lost 43lbs in a sustainable way. As I write this I'm wearing a pair of Jean shorts that I haven't wore in 3-4 years and it feels great. I still have a ways to go, at least 20-25 more pounds.

I stepped on the scale expecting 265 ( I was 285 at MD's office but that was with clothes on and I was close to naked!) NOPE; the numers 290 appeared (and yes they felt that big!). That was the point I thought "This is BS; the next step in this parade is 300! And that ain't happening!!

So I made the choice to change my lifestyle. Eat healther; EAT LESS and MOVE MORE! Cycling was not where I started it was walking but I have found cycling is as good as walking and has helped restart my weight lose. I am 178 giving me a 21% body fat (instead of the 35%). My hope is to get down to 170-175 but I will take what I got and intend to keep off the 112 pounds!!

I don't even know. Lots of little things coming together. Sleep apnea. High cholesterol. Sweating so much. General malaise. Right now I am just focusing on riding my bike and that's a good enough start for me. If I think about losing weight too much, I tend to sabotage myself.

I started riding again to get back in shape. I went hiking in May with a friend and felt like I was dying while walking the 8mile route. I have slacked off on the riding in Sept but things have been a little crazy here in Upstate NY especially the last two weeks with all the flooding. I have also agrivated or injured my knee somehow this weekend. I am not happy. I dont mind being a clyde and will always be a clyde because I am not sure I could get under 200 lbs if I wanted to. I would love to lose about 50 to 60 lbs and get down to around 220 to 205 lbs though.

292 at the doctor's office is when I got back on the bike, this was a few years ago. Gas was also approaching $4 a gallon and I stopped driving everyday.

Saw a picture of me taken at an odd angle. Was creepy. Did not like having a pot belly so off I went... Dropped from 236 to 185, decided I liked 195 better so that's where I am now

I've been trying to lose weight for years. Already diabetic, already have hypertension (both well controlled by meds), but now I'm riding, and every single pedal stroke of every single climb is saying to me "lose another 10 lbs". It's quite the incentive to be serious.

Fascinating replies so far. I am really surprised that there's so few hospitalization-based decisions... but that says a lot about you guys... a lot of good. Kind of makes me feel silly that I waited so long to change my life, but hey, live and learn!

Also fascinating is the lack of new years resolutions. I think that probably says a lot too-- New Years Resolutions are for people who aren't taking it seriously. You hear statistics like every year Gym memberships explode in January but actual gym attendance never increases. I have to figure everyone here is taking their weight loss seriously... that's why you're here!

I voted "other". I have been a diabetic for about 10 years but never watched what I ate or even took my meds like I was supposed to. I am type 2 and only have to take oral medication. One day, on a whim, I tested myself after feeling numbness in my feet. I was at 498 fasting...normal blood glucose is 70-110. Again, i was at 498! That was first thing in the morning, BEFORE I ate anything. I went to the Dr and she did an A1C. They want it to be under 7 to be in a normal range...mine was 12.9. She said if I didn't watch what I ate, take my meds like I was supposed to, and get this under control soon, that I would be on insulin and could lose my eyesight as well as my kidney function. It could even mean an early death.

That was like tossing ice cold water in my face. Talk about waking up! I immediately started walking and running and eating right. I then developed a lower back condition that hurt too much to even walk, much less run. My knees were also hurting bad. That is when i went out and bought the bike (or my WIFE bought me the bike).

IMO, being heavy and running = recipe for disaster. biking is a much better choice.
