First Long Ride

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/120282022

I'm only going to count what it did. 41.9 miles. That's an obscene amount of traveling--about 30 miles more than I ever did in my life. Note I forgot to turn it on until I was down the road. Then I pushed the start button to make sure it was off (it was) on the way back home. That’s why the "loop" is not closed and there's an odd straight line out to nowhere.

I went with an awesome group of riders--just awesome. I met them on meetup.com, and signed up for today's ride. Other than almost dying the last 10 miles, it was the best experience I've had in a long while. The organizers stayed with the slowest in the pack (which was me after mile 30 or so), even though they were obviously used to doing rides like this and this was like riding with their grandparents (no offence to the grandmother who kicked my butt on this ride!).

The first technical difficulty was the fact I forgot the back of my other GPS and the batteries went bouncing down the road at mile 5  Thankfully I am trying to decide which GPS I want on my bike and had the Forerunner going. Then my front derailleur started clacking away again. The skipping and noise had gone away on my last ride and I figured it was just the lube I added. I figured wrong. That friggin’ middle ring drove me about nuts the whole way—at least it didn’t skip much.

This was a hilly ride, don’t let the elevation fool you! There were rolling country hills with a few downhill respites, including one really long one for my max speed. There were a lot of stops to catch our breath while waiting for others to catch up, so I guess most would consider this an easy ride. All I know is that we stopped for a brief lunch and one guy sat down and just didn’t get back up! He had enough that day, and was going to rest a bit before heading back to his car.

I stopped being able to feel my butt at about mile 20, and my nethers were blessedly numb. I did great up to about mile 30, but then my legs just started locking up. I tried to keep my cadence above 70, but every hill just wore me out. My legs were so full of lactic acid it hurt to pump them, it hurt to keep them still. One of the organizers kept pace with me and kept me talking, right up over the last very long, gradual hill. I didn't walk any of them, no matter how slow I climbed them I wasn't getting off my bike. I got home and am sitting here still hot and trying to drink ice water until I have to pee. :o Now I have to fight the imminent hunger that will lead to a bad binge tomorrow...

All in all a gorgeous day and a great ride with wonderful folks. Can’t wait for the next ride, but hopefully I’ll have some more mileage on my legs and not die.

Congratulations! And I have to get to Greencastle to ride sometime. Can you recommend a guide to show me the area?

I don't know of any groups that ride in the greencastle area, but the lbs Hub City Cycles runs daily rides in the Hagerstown Area. I met the group I rode with, Frederick County Biking Group, through meetup, but they do mostly Frederick Area rides.

I was trying to be subtle and suggest WE meet for a ride. I'll try to keep up with you.

I actually don't do a lot of riding around here. I have one route that's my go-to route from my doorstep, 5 or 6 miles out, and back, but I'd rather ride on the C&O canal as a family ride or with the meetup group.
