    Clyde? Clyde who?

    I am declaring it official. My weight has dropped back under the 200 lb. mark. I was waiting until the scale consistently read under 200 before I made this declaration. My status as a Clyde is no more.

    In February of this year, I was 265 lbs. Something clicked in my head which got me to take action. My diet sucked and I was not as active as I once was. Even when I was riding my bike and exercising more, 250 lbs was the norm. Finally, I realized my appetite was not normal because I was alwYs hungry and felt hopeless for ever getting that under control.

    Slowly, I started replacing processed foods with fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grain snacks. A new gas grill got me away from fried meats I had been cooking. Pretty soon, my body started showing a preference for healthier foods. I completely stopped buying fast food and started bringing my lunch to work. I really focused on eating person and fiber rich foods low in fat. That became the key to appetite suppression along with eating smaller amounts more frequently throughout the day. Now, I don't obsess over what I will eat next because I know when and what to eat next.

    Exercise was the other side of the coin. I have always enjoyed doing stuff. Riding my bike had becom less frequent until I made the commitment to get healthy. I ride every other day, at least an hour. The days I don't ride, I work out. Walking everyday for 30 minutes also is part of my routine. Now, I feel lost without exercise.

    This is just a small part of my story and I will keep adding to it. I just wanted to start writing about it to help me reflect on it and share with others my experience.

    Absolutely will do. I'm at work and on my iPhone, so it makes typing difficult. What I was planning on doing was to post about a particular topic as I think of things or in response to other posts. Stay tuned...

    so you dropped 65lbs in 7 months, so roughly 28 weeks, which is... 2.3lbs a week, consistently! That's pretty impressive. Tell me your secrets

    No secrets, really, but I will talk about why I think I was able to drop so much weight...but first, I'd like to share what got this started.

    I have been overweight much of my life starting out as a chubby kid which I think was a result of eating all kinds of junk and being encouraged by my parents to eat lots of food. By the time I got to my junior year of high school, I was 215 lbs at around 5'11". My school offered an athletics program consisting of weight lifting and running around doing sprints, stairs, etc and over a semester I lost 30 lbs. I did this without any changes to my diet other than I stopped eating donuts in the morning. My senior year (Class of 2000), I quit the cardio stuff and only lifted weights, so I started slowly putting weight back on and was in the low 190s by the time I graduated.

    My freshman year of college saw some significant weight gain. Instead of the "Freshman 15," I made it 30 lbs. I never thought much of it and even blamed my clothes fitting tighter on them being shrunken in the laundry. Yes, I am serious. I would pick up lifting weights here and there, but with no success losing weight.

    In 2002, I bought my first mountain bike and got into cycling. I think I lost about 10 lbs, but then gained it back eventually. In 2004, I got a job at a bike shop, so I kept myself in the cycling scene, mostly mountain biking. I held steady around 235-240 lbs all the way until I finished grad school in 2006. From 2007 until early this year, I was steadily gaining until reaching my peak of 265 lbs.

    Over the past 2-3 years, I started becoming more aware of my condition. My back was always hurting as were my knees. I still enjoyed riding my bike and would lose 5 lbs (and then gain it back) whenever I got a renewed interest in riding. Seeing pictures of myself didn't match what I saw in the mirror. I became disgusted when I first had to buy pants with a 40" waist and 2XL shirts. When I started having trouble leaning forward to tie my shoes, I knew something needed to be down. My question was how.

    I have always struggled with my appetite, but didn't realize it for the longest time. Once I did, I felt powerless to do anything because I was always hungry. My answer had always been to eat whatever and whenever. Realizing that I was eating too much, I had figure out an answer.

    When I went to see the doctor for my physical 2 years ago, we discussed my weight, near diabetic status, and how to make some changes. He told me to eat low fat, low calorie foods high in fiber and protein and to use the internet to figure out what is out there. I felt angry that he gave so little effort to help me with my appetite issues. It took me nearly 2 years to do something about it because I had largely given up on trying to eat healthy.

    In January of this year, I started watching a new show on cable called Heavy. It profiled several morbidly obese people and their 6 month weight loss program they went through. In all honesty, part of the reason I started watching was because I was curious to see how such large people get to be that way and it made me feel better about myself not being nearly as big as them. I then started to realize that my own experience wasn't necessary any different than the people in this show. In another 10 years, I could have found myself looking at 400 lbs.

    The message of this show, like others focusing on weight loss, is that you have to look at it as a lifestyle change. Its cliche, but absolutely true. My lifestyle of overeating and eating fattening foods could not continue if I expected to live a healthy life. Just to give you an idea of what I was eating, a typical day would consist of:

    Fast food breakfast meals or breakfast tacos
    2 20oz sodas a day
    Candy bar/chips from the snack machine
    Fast food lunch (burger combos, deli sandwiches)
    More chips or processed food snacks before dinner
    Dinners often consisted of large steaks, pan fried chicken breasts, big cuts of pork

    Watching this show made me realize how much I was eating and how bad it was for me. I knew that it was time to take a different course.

    I think that is a good place for me to sign off for now, but next time I post, I will talk about how I got started moving in the right direction.

    Seriously, great job, for some reason I have plateaued (sp?) at 225 for 6 months now. More discipline on my part needed.

    you story before weightloss sounds a lot like mine and all the others on here. so by you just posting that you dropped below 200 its huge motivation for the newbies and re-starters to keep pluggin on to our goal.

    Congrats Flippin! Thank you for sharing your story, it is just what I needed. I just restarted back on my program after gaining back about half of what I lost over the past 2 years. I too have seen that show Heavy and used it to think a lot about why I make the choices I do, and how I "use" food for things other than fuel/nutrition, etc. Good luck with your continued success, and can't wait to read more.

    I too love watching Heavy and I also like watching Biggest Loser despite what some people say. To me, it is all inspirational. The eating thing has beeb tough for me. For sure.

    Back again to write some more...

    Where I left off was telling about how I got to where I finally was serious about changing my lifestyle. Watching the TV show Heavy was very much a spark that lit a flame. In February, I turned 29. Something about that number got me thinking about how I am not getting any younger. My youthful twenties were just about gone and I had nothing to show for it. I promised myself I would not turn 30 looking and feeling like I did when I turned 29.

    Starting out, I wasn't quite sure how I was going to stick to eating healthier and more importantly reducing how much I eat. I knew the basics as far as eating more fish and poultry and cutting out processed foods and carbs. I also had a very nasty habit of embracing anything fried. I reveled in anything battered and cooked in oil. There was no such thing as too much bacon as far as I was concerned. I even went so far as to travel 2 hours to a restaurant that I had seen on TV that served battered and deep fried (chicken fried as it is called here in Texas) and served with cream gravy. I was putting bacon in ice cream and dipping it in chocolate. Makes my stomach sick to think of that now.

    Little did I know that it would actually be my love for food that would make it possible for me to stick to a healthy diet. Last October, my wife and I went to Las Vegas and ate at a fantastic restaurant called Rosemary's. Its a neat place off the strip located in a shopping center. Its a very unassuming place from the outside and not terribly posh inside, but the food is divine. Well, that meal somewhat spoiled me and made me realize how mediocre most restaurant food is and how terrible most fast food is. Most importantly, this food showed me how fresh ingredients, herbs, and flavorful ingredients do a much better job than deep frying and using lots of fats and butters to make food taste good.

    This led me to exploring my own cooking skills and trying new things. As a birthday present to myself, I bought a new gas grill because I had been wanting to replace the cheap, junky one I had. It is amazing the difference quality cooking gear makes. Simple things like grilled chicken or fish with nothing more than a simple seasoning of sea salt, pepper, and olive oil tasted so good and I could actually sear the meat so it stayed moist.

    When you actually enjoy what you are eating, it doesn't make it feel like you are on a diet or settling for something less tasty for the sake of eating healthy. When you consider that you are trying to change your lifestyle, you have to do things that are sustainable. I could never stick to something if I had to force myself to keep doing it.

    What has amazed me is how quickly I lost my appetite for fried foods, fast food, and such. After a couple of months, I had a hard time eating just small amounts of fried foods. My wife would order fried catfish or something with a side of french fries. As usual, I would steal a bite. Now, it doesn't taste as good most of the time. Some other times, I may like the way something tastes (like cornmeal breaded catfish) but it is so rich, I can only eat a couple of bites. When you allow mostly good stuff into your body, it is amazing how easy it is to recognize when you are eating something that isn't good for you. I think this inner voice or sense is ignored by so many and that is how people get into such unhealthy habits.

    Eating healthy has also allowed me to moderate how much I eat. I just explained how certain foods have become unappetizing or are difficult to eat in larger quantities. There is also a great amount of basic food science at work here. Many unhealthy foods do not contain high amounts of nutritional value and with either load you up with fat, pump you full of empty calories, or both. Its almost like these foods work against your body to make it hungrier. That is why you can't eat just 1 Lays potato chip.

    By eating smaller amount of food more frequently, I can also keep my metabolism at a more steady rate. Also, I find that if I never let myself get too hungry, I don't have a need to gorge myself just to get satisfied. A typical day of eating goes like this for me:

    -Eat a bowl of cereal (Kashi Go Lean is my favorite since it packs a lot of protein and fiber) or a couple multi-grain waffles w/ honey along with 2-3 slices of turkey bacon (protein in the turkey bacon, fiber in the waffles) before I leave the house for work.
    -Mid-morning, I will have a cup of greek yogurt (high in protein)
    -Late morning - granola bar (I love the various Kashi chewy bars because they give a decent bit of protein and fiber)
    -Lunch - leftovers from the night before (some sort of lean meat and 2 veggies or one veggie and brown rice)
    -Early afternoon - usually a piece of fruit
    -Later afternoon - another Kashi bar usually before I leave work and then some sort of snack when I get home (varies from fruit, nuts, or multigrain pita chips and a little hummus)
    -Dinner - Same type of stuff as lunch

    I do still splurge, but that will be covered another time. Off to get some sleep.

    Temptation, rewards, and staying on track

    (sorry, I haven't posted as soon as I'd like. Here we go...)

    A lot of people have asked me how I lost the weight. I think they are expecting me to tell them I took some diet supplement or went on some crazy diet. I did it the right way, healthy eating and exercise. The exercise part is something I haven't thought much about. I just do it and I know it makes me feel good. Perhaps that is reason enough for me to have stuck with that part so well. I'll have to give it some thought and revisit that topic.

    As for healthy eat habits, a lot of people tell me that they would have a hard time sticking to a plan. In all honesty, I would have said the same thing 1 year ago, but I figured out what works for me. I am very unorganized by nature, so I knew there would be slim to no chance I would be counting calories to make sure I stayed under a certain number. Instead, I relied on common sense. I know what is healthy and I can certainly read nutrition labels to confirm what isn't. That is what I did. I stopped buying food that was high in calories, fat, and sodium. I learned that what you put in your body will affect how much you need to eat to feel full and stay satisfied. The first step was to start putting in better stuff and slowly, my body adjusted and I was able to reduce portion sizes.

    Listen to what your body is trying to tell you.

    Your body will feel better after you ween yourself off the unhealthy foods. I also found that whenever I would eat something greasy, really sweet, or decadent, my stomach would feel yucky. Your mouth may be saying hell yeah, but the rest of you is saying stop, no more! I am not saying that you should never eat unhealthy food ever again, but if you are able to break the habit of always eating that stuff, your body may not want to eat as much of it or eat it as often. Actually, some greasy fried stuff stopped tasting as good because I would taste nothing but the grease which coats my mouth. That's been my experience.

    A perfect example I thought of the other day was how I had gotten into such a habit of stopping on the way to work to pick up breakfast. I probably did this 4 days per work week split just about evenly between McDonalds and a place that sells breakfast tacos. It got to the point where I had recognized that I didn't full appreciate how tasty this stuff was because I had it all the time. When I was little, my parents barely spent money eating out, so whenever we did get something at a restaurant, it was really special. That had been lost due to the frequency of my restaurant visits. That is why I really question anyone who says that they would miss their old favorite foods too much to be able to give them up. I don't think they realize how little they actually appreciate those foods due to how frequently those items are consumed.

    I have found that there are certain things I don't care for any more and those are obviously much easier to not eat than certain other things that I still have a taste for. I still have a sweet tooth, but now I am more sensitive to how sweet things are. A little bit now goes a long way and that is a great place to be because I don't eat nearly as much as I used to.

    I think the most important thing to come away with here is that if you are looking to make a change, realize that it is going to be a change. Your eating will have to be different for the rest of your life, but don't be afraid that you will miss it. You only miss it if you want to miss it. When I realized how much better healthy eating made me feel, it motivated me more not to go back to my old habits.

    I have a hard time with impulse eating and massive cravings for sweets.

    Like you, excersise is the easy part. If I dont bike, I hit the gym and if I dont hit he gym, I am usually biking.

    I haven't made it below Clyde status yet but Flippin's methods and mine are almost identical! In the last 4 days, I have weighed 222lbs or less and that is officially my lowest weight since I was in High School (~20 years).

    I focus on getting the maximum protein and fiber per calorie and use MFP to tell me how many calories I have for the day. I have learned to weigh everything I fix at the house so that I understand what is a true portion size. Kashi Go Lean is one of my favorite breakfast foods and the Kashi TLC bars are great for snacks!

    Seven more pounds to lose and I will no longer be obese but simply overweight! To drop below 215lbs will be my Christmas present to myself as last Christmas I weighed 355lbs.
