What is a good free app...

... For making my smart phone into a bike computer?

I know someone posted something here a while ago in a thread, but then I didn't have a smart phone. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago, just in time for the cold weather too.

Thank You

Apple or otherwise?

Mr Sinister 11-14-11 06:16 AM

Yeah, maybe I should have said. Its not an apple, it is otherwise. Samsung Galaxy

Next, don't they have some sort of an App Store? Blackberry has App World. I buy business tools/software from them. Samsung uses Android os for that rig, don't they?

EDIT: Look through the Android Apps for what you are looking for.

I use Bike Brain by Bio Logic, but I have an iPhone. Not sure if it's available for other platforms.

I use I Map My Ride. It is free, available in the market, and works well enough. I also use a cycling computer for something that I can see and use w/o putting my phone at further risk.

Just in case you were interested, I have a Ram Mount in like new condition I would be happy to part with..../shamelessplug

I like the endomondo app, cardiotrainer is another good one I've used.. The third app which I have not tried which is cycling specific is Strava

BRAZUCA 11-15-11 02:42 PM

Endomondo for sure. I use it and it is amazing and free!

I used RunKeeper for most of this year on my DroidX. Easy to use, tracks your rides via satellite, and you can get additional reporting for an annual fee on the website. With a certain Polar HRM, you can link your phone to your HRM/Runkeeper via bluetooth.

Pretty slick app. 2 thumbs up.

Hope this is helpful. There is a good free program for Win CE devices that have GPS hardware that Ive used with our older PND called Noni GPS Plot, it does most of the stuff that bike computers do.

Lots of people have older GPS devices that have no map update options. They probably work fine with NoniGPSPlot forever..

The URL is

"NoniGPSPlot

This tool allows you to locate your position in relation with other GPS points, to see the journey you have traveled.
You can find back your place at harbour after a trip on boat, the starting point of an excursion or locate your car in a huge car park,
A place of which you know the location,
To see the excursion you made,
Speed trap alert or lots of other things...
Tracks and saved points can be exported to GoogleEarth and to GPX standard.
Put your old tracks in the background with a system of tracing,
Put maps in the background (moving map),
And those can be downloaded directly from Internet if you have an access to Internet on your PDA (GoogleMap maps, YahooMap, VirtualEarth and some layers of OpenStreetMap). Display a graph of altitude, speed or signal level. "
