The Official Clydesdale Wintersports Club
So we finally got some snow accumulation last night. Which means I shall be transitioning into wintersports and doing less cycling now. But that doesn't mean I still can't post here! Or does it?
No, it doesn't.
So, anyone who partakes in winter sports; skiing, snowshoeing, snowcycling, snowsledding, snowanything... let's hear about it here!

Let's get this party started.
3.6 miles and 2 hours of snowshoeing did it for me today. I was shooting for 3 hours but I developed some rather large blisters on my toes so I cut it short. As it turns out, it's not a good idea to just jump right into doing hours of a sport you've never done before! Who'dathunkit?!

This is my winter sport ( I cycle too but not as much).
Not as white (or agrueably as pretty) as your winter but we ride up into the Sierra's where the snow is so I hope that counts.

Seattle doesn't get much snow, but the mountains on both sides of the city do. I do a lot of hiking, a little bit of snow shoeing (the national park service runs tours from Paradise on Mt Rainier, and from Hurricane Ridge).

Funny you should ask. Many older Canadians would love nothing better than to join you under the palms. But the older I get, the more I appreciate four real seasons. This winter, I'll be skating, snowshoeing, sledding, skating and skiing, downhill and XC. And riding my bike when the roads are clear. You can dress for the cold, but not for ice.

Last year mid October through the end of December I was in Wisconsin..........................snow wasn't bad, but the cold wind was killing me.
And I spent my childhood in Switzerland back in the early 1960s. This time of year is the best down here, high 40s, 50s, and 60s, gets to 70s some days. We do get the occasional freeze though. But no snow................we did get some in Daytona Beach back in early 1977, lasted about a whole hour or so.

I really don't know how people can stand that.

Some old guy said this to me once: "You can always warm up but can't always cool down" As I get older I think I finally get it. I am sure this was a quote from the days before air conditioning.

I used to. I've drive to the 'end' of Angeles Chrest Highway, meaning the point where they stopped plowing it and then take off cross country skiing. It was a very nice bit of excercise, about 3 miles of rolling terain to Islip saddle, then a long gradual climb. I'd just go until exhausted and then turn and have a long easy gradual downhill and then I was rested enough for those 3 miles back to the car.
It was sort of funny as I'd ski in shorts and see others out in down from head to toe.

As it gets colder, I find it more and more difficult to will myself into spandex so I can go freeze half to death. I recently started geocaching. It keeps me out and about, but I can do it in jeans, hiking boots and a heavy jacket. The main advantage over traditional hiking is that geocaching take me places I might not otherwise think to explore.

Winter cycling gear under the Christmas tree.
Don't need them down here, but if I lived up in [strike]stupidly-cold country[/strike] the north, I'd spring for a pair of spiked tires for my commuter.
I spent ten years in Detroit one winter. If I never again hear the term "ineffectual sunlight" on a weather forecast, it'll be too soon. I grew up in SoCal, so I'm familiar with the seasons "Slightly Cool", "Sssssummmmmmmeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr", "Slightly Wet", and "Dark Earlier".
I enjoy all five seasons in the Carolinas. Winter is cold enough to truly appreciate spring and fall, without being so cold and long to spike the suicide rate.

I did some cross-country skiing years (I mean years) ago. I realized just a couple of weeks ago that I still have my old skis, boots, bindings and poles, so I promised myself I'll get them out when it snows this year. Now it's just a matter of waiting for it to happen. In the meantime I'll be at the gym.

This winter it seems like Mrs. Zoxe and I are going to do a lot of swimming at the gym.
The "discount" gym we were in got bought (and closed by) LA Fitness last month. So we're paying discount prices and getting full service treatment. (I have no doubt that they'll sneak the $$ up later, but we'll enjoy it while it lasts).
Oddly enough, at peak hours in the trendy suburb closest to us, we can get a swim lane to share whereas we can't get on most of the cardio equipment. And hot tub afterwards, since we're already dressed for it!!
Since we're doing maybe 2-3 sprint Tri's next summer, it's the perfect excuse to start Tri training early.
My Triceps and Shoulders already look better in the mirror. Wish my gut would evaporate though....

Something similar happened to me, though it was Lifetime that bought my gym, and instead of closing it, they're keeping it open as a "bronze-level" facility. Meaning it's not open 24 hours a day and they don't offer towels.

Actually I just got my snow shoes out. Unfortunately not for me. I'm loaning them to a friend over Christmas. I just had kneed surgery so the thought of climbing kind of makes me cringe right now. Maybe later in the season...

Well, I just made it back down to Texas so that is where I will sit for winter. After no rain at my home base since last July it rained today and is supposed to rain for the next few days. Ha! No riding yet. Bikes are still all apart in the back of the car.
