Need to find some riding buddies

That live in St.Petersburg/Gulfport Florida. I currently ride with a few of my friends, but they aren't as serious about riding as I am, so finding someone to ride with that is around my age (18) would be nice. I doubt anyone on the Clyde/Athena forum live near me, but if you do, that would be awesome.

Also, it is worth noting that I enjoy riding fast. I do not own a full on road bike because I don't really like them, but I can easily keep up with one on my FX. To those of you that might suggest asking your LBS or checking school board postings, I have. The LBS does group rides, but they only go once a week and they don't go very far. And the only people who commute by bike are hipsters with crappy attitudes on their colorful fixed gear road bike.

Have you tried meetup.com? You can search for groups near you that participate in almost any activity. I found my first group ride through meetup. You could also start your own group...

Have you tried http://stpetecycling.com/?

A friend of mine that was down there for work rode with them a couple times and said that he really enjoyed it.

I'd try other LBS shops that might not be quite as close.

Also, meetup.com.

A method that will almost assuredly produce results, but is more time-consuming:

Look for charity rides in the area
Drill down on their web sites, looking for 'teams'
Look for teams that have some sort of affiliation with a bike shop, brewery, or coffee shop.
Follow any links to team web sites.
Poke around those web sites to see if they have weekly rides.
Send e-mails to see what the group is like.
Pick one (or more), and start riding.

You're not likely to find the 'perfect' group the first few times out. But if you start riding with a group, eventually, you'll get to chatting with some of them, and somebody will let you in on some other group that might meet your interests better.

I'm expecting to be down in the sunshine state a few times next year. Hopefully I'll get the chance to meet up with you at least one of those times.

Go on the LBS's rides. Maybe you'll find others on the rides who also wish to ride more frequently and farther.

Always wanted to try that. Nothing like that around here though.
