black: I did the STP back in the 1990's when I was younger. You can do it bro. We went from Seattle to Longview, 150 miles, in one day. We could have polished off the last 50 miles but my friend and I both lived in Longview at the time. You will love it.

1.) Ride hard enough so CraigB is at least sweating when I go into cardiac arrest.
2.) Find one faster and one slower local rider to train with.
3.) Do a biking vacation. Chefisaac's DC ride sounds interesting but no camping please.
4.) Riding 4000 miles seems very doable.
5.) Increase avg cadence from 90 to 100.
6.) Do a watersports activity in the afternoons when the temps get really hot.

My plan for this year...
1. Commute to work on my bike at least 80% of the time
2. Ride a total of 4000 miles this year (rode 1500+ last year weekends only)
3. Drop my body weight from the 267.4 is was this morning to 210lbs.

That should be plenty for a 57 year old man....

My time will be split between my home in Chicago and an office I'm helping to open in Twinsburg, Ohio. I also plan to visit my wife's family in Italy for vacation in August or September. I'm going to keep a bike or two in each location. Cycling in Chicago is familiar and I have several friends and groups that I ride with. Twinsburg is near the Cuyahoga National Park and offers hundreds of miles of first class cycling. Cycling in Italy will be excellent, if I can manage the climbs.

I'd like to complete a few short tours. I'd also like to attend a gravel-road century.

My normal annual cycling mileage has been in the 4000 to 5000 mile/year range over the last several years. I should be able to manage that again.

I'd like to complete several organized century or longer rides in 2012. I'll also do an independent century ride monthly, starting in March.

My goal for cycling this year are to do the STP in 2 days. I want to do it much faster than I did the first time around, 3 years ago. I also want to ride more club rides this year. I don't have a specific distance to ride this year, but I want to be about 40 lbs lighter than I am right now when I do the STP in July. If I can lose the weight, I will be much lighter than when I did it 3 years ago, which hopefully I can be faster. I have already taken off close to 40lbs so I am confident that I can do it. I also want to complete the CTS Power DVD series in the next few months. It will be challenging since I have to travel to SF one week every month and will be going to India at least one time for 2 weeks while I do the 8 weeks of training with the CTS Power DVD's.

2012 will be my first full year cycling, so mine might seem a little weak
1) 2000 miles, not including trainer miles (This ones difficult due to a short 5 mile commute and working from home a couple days a week).
2) 4 centuries (scheduled in large group rides)
3) lose 60 pounds
4) start off roading

I'll give my fitness goals which rely on many biking goals.

- Get on the bike at least once a week no matter what is going on in life
- Strive for riding three days a week, minimum 10 miles an outing (see above goal if I have to work mucho-mega, there are also several sporting events for the kids, school work is behind, and a plague of locusts arrives)
- During weeks when the weather doesn't make it dangerous to ride (snow, ice) go out on one 25 miler.

If all the above goes well
- Lose 30 lbs of fat. This may not result in 30lbs body weight change
- I am boderline high blood pressure. I'd like get down to a more healthy reading.

A mix of cycling and other goals, still to be refined:
  • Get faster on the bike, which probably means pushing it more rather than simply putting in the miles. I am very slow and want to be able to ride with people and do long rides in the time allowed.
  • In a few days I turn 57. I want to ride 57 miles some nice day in January when it isn't too windy.
  • Ride 100k.
  • Do a multi-day charity ride, either Habitat for Humanity or one of the MS rides, when I am up north this summer.
  • Work on strength training by doing trainer designed weight program in motorhome two days a week. In spring return to gym for a refresher with the trainer.
  • Do neck and shoulder exercises every other day. No matter how boring it is. I've fallen off on this one since getting to Texas. I can feel it in my neck
  • Exercise at least 6 hours a week.
  • Maintain weight to no more than 112 pounds.
  • Count calories every day.
  • Weigh in once a week.
  • Eat plenty of blueberries, even though they cost way too much money.
  • Watch the sweets!
  • Watch my impulsiveness: I buy too many things I don't need.

Not sure whether to have any running or walking goals yet.

Ping Spinnaker in the Touring Forum about Italy. He'd love to talk about it. As for the Cuyahoga National Park, the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath and Bike and Hike Trail are good off-road rides. Ping iforgetmename for suggestions on riding in the Cleveland area.

Neil, If my finances permit I am coming on a roadtrip with the specific purpose to come ride somewhere with you on bicycles. Anyone with your drive and devotion is someone I want to have the honor of riding with.

I wasn't go to commit to anything this year due to some changes which means I may have less time to get out and ride. Still planning on doing the Livestrong Philly ride again. Did the century last year but more of my family wants to get involved so I may be doing a shorter route at a slower pace on a tandem. I dropped 35 pounds last year, gained 10 back over the past couple of months due to some back issues and soda consumption. As a result I would like to drop 30 pounds this year and try to get down to 200ish. Lastly, some friends are trying to talk my into entering a Tough Mudder run. My only hang up is running through the live electric wires but I most likely will suck it up and train for that as well. Ohh, I forgot, if I can fit it in my family's schedule some how, I still want to ride from Pittsburgh to D.C. on the GAP & C&O trails. Kind of torn between taking my time or seeing how fast I can do it. Choosing the latter, since it will be hard to get the time off and someone to watch the kids.

The GAP and C & O can be done as back to back ultracycling efforts. GAP is 135 miles. C & O is 185 miles, and I recall seeing a 'record' time of 12 hours and change.

Who alleges that? From the Pinnacle you can see the gas station at the intersection of Hawk Mountain Road & SR 173. There are at least two views from Old Loggers Path that are far better.
