I started WW about a year ago and have dropped about 50 lbs. I went to "meetings" on-line, and frequented a forum there called GOAD (Guys on a Diet). I remember talking to IMACflyr there (My handle was O'sidePonsone)

Their mantra "diets don't work" is very telling of the strength of their approach. I was not completely satisfied with the points system, though. The beauty of it is that it simplifies planning your meals. The weakness I found was that it didn't track things specific to my situation, like sodium intake. I started my own Excel spreadsheet that tracks sodium, and also displays the %calories from fat-carb-protien. It also tracks what %of carb is sugar (I manage to keep it under 25%), and what %fat is saturated. I do some very detailed label reading.

Last December I went off WW to focus on calorie counting on my own. I miss the forums a little, but not the way they were set up, where threads were allowed to die unless restarted on a daily basis, no PM's, etc.

(OT My WW username contained the word Ponsone <in Spanish it is spelled ponson> It is a conjugate of the word pansa, which is gut, or belly in English. Adding the superlative suffix "on", it becomes "tubby", or "fatso")

I run a risk of being the poopy head, but:

Brain: How are we going to get the earth to lose weight?
Pinky: I know! We can get everyone to go on a diet!
Brain: Diets don’t work, Pinky.
Pinky: Not even if you call them “a whole new way of eating”?
Brain: No.

I have no problem what people may or may not say about WW. For me, it works. And life is about finding what works for you. This works for me. Period.

Great! I kind of wish I'd done Weight Watchers just so I could become a lifetime member for free if the weight stays off. I like free. The support would be nice. (And I am sorry for the downer quote in an upbeat thread, I'd take it out but it is too late. I just think WW and many other programs are a bit disingenuous in how they use the word "diet". A nit not appropriate for this nice thread. )

Exactly. The difference is between "going on a diet", and "improving your diet".

At my heaviest ~300lb at dad's 80th birthday. As you can see, it's not the genes

Lost over 5 lbs first week and not an ounce the second week. Annoying but I'm keeping on keeping on. Did you notice there is a ww group for cyclists? Actually there are two "Big Guys on two wheels" and "Cyclists on Weight Watchers" Next weight in is Sunday, gotta do better

Here is an excellent article on how you need to use a moving average to see your weight loss trends, rather than paying too much attention to a particular weight on a particular week: http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/e4/signalnoise.html

He's got a number of other interesting articles as well.

started WW a few weeks ago. I am down 9 LBS and I am hitting the excersie bike 4 to 5 days a week. I like the fact I can still have beer and pizza, just not a 12 pack and 6 pieces...

Congrats on the weight loss! I won't eat pizza at all now because I'm afraid I won't be able to stop at one or two slices . . .
