Back in 2002, I went to the meetings each week. I just got lazy with my food choices. My interim attempts at weight loss lacked the long-term commitment needed to be successful.

My experience over the past year and a quarter is that if I had a big exercise week I lost weight some days later. I also have ridden a lot of miles this week and I actually show up a pound. Ten to one I'll be down again in a few days.

    Chef,
Congrats on the 2 pounds! That's right where you should be in terms of a week's loss... at the upper end of where you should be in fact!. As you continue to lose, your body is not going to shed the pounds as quickly or as "easily" as it does early on. Prepare yourself for those weeks where you just KNOW you're going to have a HUGE loss and you drop "only" .5 or 0 even. It happens!

I've personally found that there is more of a correlation with what I'm eating and loss than there is with how much I've exercised and loss. I'm not saying you're not eating on-plan, but that you may have other things affecting the scale. ...building muscle maybe?

Last summer I had a couple weeks where I rode a LOT of miles in some serious heat. I walked into my meetings thinking I had to have lost 4 or 5 pounds EASY! Nope... .6!! I also had weeks where I didn't get out at all, but I did very closely watch what I was eating. My losses those weeks were much better. ymmv!

Anyway, congratulations on the loss, again! Onward and downward!

Gold: I hope that is the way it works out. I know I need to get in some gym time and soon I need to start lifting a little but I am really loving being outside and riding. I love it!

Ima: I know I will get to that point but I didnt/dont think I am there yet. I am 309 pounds and lost, to date 25 pounds so I am *hoping* I still have some time of good losses until my body slows down. I talked with one of the meeting leaders today and she said perhaps I am starving my body. I have 66 points and sometimes have points left at the end of the day. I almost (99%) never touch my weeklies and NEVER touch my activity points but she said with all the riding I did/do perhaps I am starving my body so I am going to start paying more attention to that and perhaps focus on some grains in the evening time or during lunch time. I eat a lot of veggies and lean protein so perhaps I will work in some more grains.

Everyone says that after a while your body gets used to the activity you do but with riding, there are so many intensities. I know I need to sneak in some gym work and perhaps some weight lifting but I really LOVE riding.

Chef: At this point in time, I don't plan on going back to meetings. I may go back when I have reached my goal weight and I can go for free. Part of my daily plan are things I did or ate when I lost my weight 10 years ago.

I would agree with your response to Ima. I know it doesn't sound possible or reasonable, but if you don't eat all of your points and use some, if not all of your earned activity points on a daily basis, your body can go into starvation mode and "hoard" or hold onto the body fat as energy reserves. There are days that I haven't used all of my points, but I do my best to get in.

I would keep on riding and incorporate a few more protein type snacks into your day.

curt: I would agree. I reached all 66 of my points today and 1 of my weeklies but did it with a donut or two. Not the end of the world. But damn it tasted good!

Chef: This may sound strange, but the donuts will actually help you. The beauty of the weight watcher program is you can eat anything you want to, you simply have to account for what you have eaten. Other than getting in your fruits/vegetables, water, and milks in each day, the source of your points doesn't matter. So, if you need to consume a certain number of points at the end of the day, and it can be done with eating a donut, then go for it.

Way to go everyone, keep it up. Is WW expensive, and do you have to do the meetings thing? I have a good friend who needs to drop about 70 lbs, he's been hesitant to try WW b/c he doesnt think it'll work. Nice to hear stories here that it does.

PS tractorlegs, Your 1985 Trek 520 is a freakin sexy bike. You should totally "restore" it.
Thats it really. You cant just stop cold turkey eating what you used to, atleast not IMO. You have to progress and slow down on drinking soda, and so forth. if you just stopped cold turkey, that would give you more of an incentive to cheat and go back or continue doing what you're doing. Mens Health did a great article on WW years back, and said they thought they were the best out of all of the diet plans.

Like you said, no magic pill, if you cut down on all the crap you eat, drink a $hitload of water a day, you'll drop weight.

lemon: Thats what I like WW because I can eat some of the stuff I used to. Just smaller portions and I think more before I eat. It is helping me find a relationship with food.

The price is a little less than $20 per month online, and you don't need to go to the meetings. The online version is very clear in its expectations and I, for one, like the way it makes you responsible for your own health/weight loss. I'm at 5 weeks and have lost somewhere between 10 to 12 pounds. It works if the plan is followed, and it is not that difficult to follow.

Eighteen bucks a month or so is less than you will save on groceries and eating out on the program. (I have found that a big myth is that eating healthy costs more than eating carp. That only applies if you buy a lot of "processed healthy" stuff.)

The only additional cost would be buying the fresh fruits and vegetables that need to be eaten each day. Before joining WW, I know I wasn't eating 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day!!

I would go to a meeting just out of curiosity but the only one in my area that occurs when I'm not working is at the same time as my favorite group ride

There's a book out called The carb cycling diet : optimize your health, lose weight, feel great-without giving up the foods you love

By Roman Malkov all should check out, pretty good read IMO.

So now it's 5 weeks since I joined WW and posted the OP, and this morning's weigh-in was 265 - Exactly a ten pound weight loss over the 5 week period, averaging 2 pounds per week. Right on track! I'm still impressed with WW.

trac: this weeks meeting was amazing. I went Tuesday which is my weigh in day and went Saturday which is my wifes weigh in day. Same teacher and subject but what makes it different is the crowd. I love the subject this week too!

I weigh in Tuesday night. Looking forward to it. This week was a little change because I have increased what I ate, eating all my dailies and diving into the majority of my weeklies. Last week with riding 136 miles and only losing 2 pounds (which I am happy but but did not seem like it matched my workouts) I want to see if it gets better.
