The Early Birds Caught Worms

This year's edition of Cycle Oregon's week ride sold out in 40 min.

The route announcement "party" was streamed, and registration opened at midnight (EST). Glad we decided to stay up and not wait until this morning.

This year's route includes a climb up to Crater Lake and the option to circle the rim road twice for the masochists among us. I climbed up to Crater Lake (albeit via a different route) and circled the rim during CO '07. The GF has never been, so we will at least go up to the rim. Whether we'll circle the lake is TBD. If you do every option during the tour, you will end up with 40,000' of climbing. Yikes.

I've only been to Crater Lake once. It was June, and I wasn't able to camp where I planned to because of the six feet of snow on the ground. But it was unbelievably gorgeous. I'd love to head back down that way with my bike some time...

Yeah. June is early. Some of the roads in the park can still be closed. In '07 we climbed up to the rim from Diamond Lake. It was about a 13 mile climb with a few mile flat to slightly downhill stretch. The ride around the rim itself is 34 miles. You get above 7,000' three times. Highest point is over 7,800' After circling the rim, we had to descend the climb we did in the morning. I was so tired I didn't want to go down hill for 13 miles back to camp at the lake. 6,470' of climbing in 60 miles, and mosty of the last 13 miles were down hill.
