FG/SS Wheels
314+ Clyde looking for a set of wheels for my fixie build.
I have pretty much everything but the wheels. |
I don't know JACK about FG/SS hubs, however here is what I would suggest for the rest:
-36 hole Velocity Deep-V rims (36 hole hubs, too...of course) -Double butted 14/15ga stainless spokes from DT, Wheelsmith, Sapim. I use Wheelsmith myself, but I think all three of those brands are good. Someone might suggest straight 14ga spokes, Those would probably be fine too... -BRASS nipples. I'll never use aluminum. Have them built by someone who knows wheels. Maybe get a hold of Peter White (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/Wheels.asp) although he is maybe a bit pricy but, he guarantees no broken spokes... That is all I got for ya :) |
36h Deep V's, 3x front and rear. Hand built by someone who knows what they're doing like nymtber said.

Ditto.

Just to throw out a pre-built wheelset option, Eighth Inch (www.eighthinch.com) has a fixed gear wheelset called the Juilian wheelset that comes in 48h with a deep v triple walled rim. It's under $200 and you could pay a little extra to get your lbs to tension and true them if you want extra peace of mind. Other than that, I hear that you can't get stronger wheels than handbuilt by Peter White.

I'd go w/Velocity Chukkers man (wider versions of the Deep V) - they're made for bike polo (fixies) and stunts. I have a set of 36 spoke chukkers on my commuter and they're stout.
|
Heres what they look like. Same as the Deep V but you have the ability to mount wide tires.

I also run chukkers but one bike has 32 and one has 36. They were handbuilt and take plenty of use/abuse with no issues.
