Doctor said the "D" word

So my last physical results on Thursday kind of hit me with a dose of reality. Doctor said I tested positive for diabetes (type 2). I'm not worried though. I'm going to beat this and get it completly under control. We caught this early (last year I was fine) and I think that will help.
I figure I'll play the "sugar" card anytime I'm asked to mow the lawn or something else boring. "Sorry honey can't mow the lawn, gotta ride, Doc said exercise..."

Anyone have any success stories in beating this?

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Yes, exercise and diet will help. Mowing the lawn is exercise, though, I hate to break it to you. I was insulin dependent, Type II, and am now off all mmeds for diabetes and maintain my sugars nicely. A1C was 5.1, last time it was checked.

i reckon that will work twice, then you are in for a world of hurt. DO keep your excise up and keep a health mind frame and i can't see it slowing you down to much.

NOW go mow your lawn... then do mine

Thats what I do. Never owned a mower with a motor.

But I've found health and proper weight comes from healthly eating. I love to exercise for the fitness and energy.

My sister did the same thing. Exercise, and diet helped her with Type II I will also suggest before you do anything drastic, check with your doctor. My sister also had to give up sugars, and breads. She can only have them every so often.

Exercise helps a ton. I commute by bicycle now. Back when I was diagnosed my a1c was 15.7. Not a typo ... 15.7! I've lost a lot of weight (still need to lose more) and am off the meds (was on Glucophage XR after getting diagnosed). Last checkup my a1c was 5.4, and I'm off all the meds.

You can totally do it!

It's still exercise if it has a motor... As long as it isn't a riding mower.

The good news is hopefully your Dr. caught it early before major damage has been done. Type II is totally manageable. Diet and exercise together is the ticket. For me exercise has played a much higher role than diet. By diet I'm talking lifestyle changes in the way you eat when what how much etc.

Oh and my John Deere L110 is exercise. It take mental exercise to keep my swaths straight, also have to get off occasionally to move toys, branches, and other stuff. I used a push mower on my lawn just once. 3/4 ac of grass is a bit much for a push mower.

Start with losing at least 10% of your current body weight. Take a look at what you "should" weigh...I don't mean the classic BMI figures since they are really low.
I recently lost 45 pounds and all my blood work was "suddenly" where it's supposed to be.
I'm still a bit heavy by the BMI table but I'm now at the low end of "overweight" rather than OBESE!

Hey chief, got diagnosed w/ type II a year ago last week, 10.9 h1bAC. Last week in my yearly check-up, 5.4! Was made up with that - no meds for me, and back to six monthly check-ups.

Exercise and diet is the way out, but I only did it since early December (had a tough year last year and so made up loads of excuses). Lost around 10% of body weight and did gym four times a week since. Really is beatable (or at least, kept in control)!

Time to change some habits my friend.

What is your plan of attach? It is not only the exercise, it is the eating habits. For me, it is 80% of what I eat and 20% of exercising.

Most people say, anecdotally, that diet is more important than exercise. But no one hear needs to hear that exercise is important generally.

I saw an article just a few days ago reporting new findings that strength training is more important than cardio, which surprised me.

Just a word of caution. You will never "beat this". You have been diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes, and that is what you will be until your days on this earth are over. However, it is totally possible to "manage" it. As other have said, diet and exercise is the key. By losing 40 pounds, I was able to stop taking oral medicine completely, and now the disease managed through smart diet and frequent exercise. Again, you will never not be a Type-2 diabetic ... you can only manage it.

Best of luck to you. Other than making smart choices, it need not affect your quality of life. In fact, maintaining a healthy weight and through frequent exercise, your quality of life will probably improve.
