No April Fool here, completed my first century yesterday

I have had a phenomenal weekend in Charleston, SC.

First on Sat I ran the Cooper River Bridge 10k with 43,000 other souls, what a fun run! I have not been running much but finished in a respectable for me 59:49.

The following day I cycled in the 'After the Bridge Run' ride. I had fun, got in with a good group that all worked together and managed to complete the 103.5 mile route in 5hrs 23mins at a 20.2 mph avg (gotta love riding at the beach). Very pleased with the results and the fact that I can still walk after this weekend's exertions

Thanks to the inspiration from so many other posters on this board, I continue to find and conquer new challenges and feel better about myself.

Iron Chef,

I think there are probably a number of things to be prepared for when tackling something like a century ride. I've only been cycling for about 18 months so am certainly not the most experienced.

One thing for sure is to make sure that you have plenty of saddle time, sitting on a saddle for 5--8 hrs can be a pain

Also it is vital to drink plenty of fluids and consume enough calories to keep up energy levels. I had done a number of 50-65 mile rides in my area which is the western NC foothills and mountains. To be honest many of those rides were much harder than this century due to all the climbing.

This ride was at the beach so was pretty flat but there was a lot of wind so it was very helpful to work in a group taking a pull and then recovering in the paceline. This was why we had such a good avg. One thing about the flats though, is that you have to pedal almost continuously so it is tiring in a different way than climbing hills.

I think doing a supported ride is a great way to go as they have plenty of rest stops to refill fluids and snacks. Also knowing there is SAG support gives a little more confidence when you are a long way from home. Also in an organized ride there will be many other riders who you can work with, talk with and keep up your confidence when the going gets tough.

Get out there and do it!!

Awesome achievement! I'd be thrilled to average 20 mph for 20 miles, let alone 100. You are an inspiration. When you were training for this were you using a guide or schedule?

I haven't been training particularly for this ride but I do try to ride 2-3 times a week. This wine has been particularly mild is I've been able to get in a fair number of rides. I managed to do more than 400 miles in March and am hoping for 500 in April. I don't think there is a lot of science to it, just getting out on the bike and getting your miles in.

It seems that I'm on track by the training guide for the century I am doing, in fact I'm a bit ahead of schedule. I also have plans to do the Seattle to Portland which is two back to back centurys in July so I'm somewhat following that schedule as well. I can see how rest stops and support can make this much less daunting.
