weight loss/gain woes!!!!!
 
Soo since i'm a newb i'll give some back story. January 2011 i went to doc...weighed in at 410lbs. :cry: and my blood sugar was rocketed. So ok fatty time to drop weight so i went full keto and dropped 75lbs by july *woot* than kinda slipped off the diet path for a month. Jumped onto a modifiedversion of the diet and started to do lifting at gym...welp the holidays were hard on me diet wise but i have progressively been lifting alot and building muscle. Well i restarted diet (cyclical keto diet) and added some stationary biking to the mix.....well as of a week ago i bought a bike and have been getting into riding around and am averaging 10-14mph14mph for 3-6a miles a day. So i have been trying to better health but scale keeps climbing. I'm now at 365 from 335...its sooo damn frustrating. So i come to you my new found(hopefully) friends. Do ya think the weight gain is muscle, should I be setting any certain goals on the bike. Have ya noticed increased weightgain/loss when you started cycling. Sorry i know i just dumped a ton of info on ya. Any info would be helpful thanx in advance.

I've been lifting since October and during that first month I put on about 10lbs of muscle, and maybe 2lbs a month after that. So, a portion of that weight gain was probably the "newb gains" and the other potion was the transition out of the Atkins diet.

As far as cycling goes, well, it definatley aids in weight loss. Noticeable gains from cycling? No. I mean you do improve your endurance and cardio, but cycling is not the way to build muscle. I can be done, but it's not near as efficient as gaining muscle through the gym.

I dont plan on stopping the weight lifting. I just wanna lose inches and fat....would def be nice to have the scale say 250your by xmas....

From my experience with the keto diet I initially lost weight but it was easy to put back on if i cheated. Look into what your daily calorie intake at your weight should be and keep dropping your intake as you lose. I am a newbie to the cycling for exercise myself but am using some of the same methods as I did in the gym like watching my heart rate and keeping it at around 65-70 percent of what my max heart rate should be for at least 30 minutes but i usually ride for an hr. Drink lots of water. I am sure most i have said you've heard and maybe i am wrong but i lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks exercising 3 days a week and cutting back on food portions. Good luck

bodybuilding.com has some good workouts for weight loss if you haven't looked there. I plan on getting back to resistance training soon. I don't know your workout but try 3 sets of 10-12 reps with only 1min rest lifting to failure.

I think you took my post the wrong way.

You don't have to stop weight lifting. It's a great way to lose weight and keep off the fat. Even if you gain muscle weight your clothes will fit better and you will look great. Definitely don't stop lifting! :thumb:

My current workout it the 5x5 routine. 3 warmup sets at 5 reps than 2 heavy sets @5 reps. Mix that with minimal rest and than a 15min high intesity stationary bike run (after a protein shake) 3-4 times a week and planning on cycling 4-5 times a week

You will need to reduce calories to lose weight. The issue then is how much muscle as opposed to fat will you lose and how much strength you can maintain. As you lose weight you may find that you will lose muscle mass as well as fat. Or you may not. It is more likely you will lose muscle if you are extremely overweight--you might not need all that lean mass. A morbidly obese person not only has more fat than normal weight person, but also has more lean mass. (Sorry, can't find a citation in a quick look). Muscle loss also occurs if you don't do resistance work and either don't exercise at all or only do cardio.

So, maybe the thing to do is drop the calories and keep up the resistance work. If you find that you are losing strength, back off on the calorie reduction. Be sure to schedule in rest days.
