Personal Milestone
A goal I have had since starting back at serious cycling a year and a half ago was to climb a particular hill. This hill is not the steepest, or the longest (435 ft in about 1 1/2 miles=~5%). It is one I did routinely back in high school, but have not climbed, except by car in over thirty-five years. My goal was to climb it by memorial day, and I did it. (could have done it sooner, but for logistics)

That it came midway (mile 23.5-mile 25) along my second fifty miler was icing on the cake. I hadn't planned on doing fifty. I pulled into a train station at mile 28.5 to catch the "cheater rail" home, but missed the first one I was "racing", and saw that the next wasn't to arrive for two hours, so I decided to race that one to my lunch stop at mile 48.7. I beat it by about 5 minutes.
All in all, one of my better rides.

Good job! I've set myself a challenge...to practice riding hills. To actually actually practice on a regular basis to ride up hills. Since I live on top of a hill, it's fairly easy to find one! I find I do OK on a 4% and under grade, but today I tried a 9.5% grade & had to get off the bike & push. It's OK. I'm happy that I'm able to do the 4% grade fairly easily. The steeper grades will come. Congrats on your milestone!

I was going up one of the steep hills around the lake on this morning's ride (It's known as "Nice Hill" because someone spray painted "Nice Hill" with a smiley face a few yards from the top). I passed a kid and grandma who had just gotten off to walk their bikes up the hill. The kid called out "He makes it look easy!!". That felt good, since I've struggled to get to this point.

Very nice accomplishment. Climbing will only get easier as you keep challenging yourself further. The metric looks tough, but you'll be ready.
