Bloomberg on a crusade to fight obesity

I know somebody resurrected that old "Coke doesn't make people fat" thread recently, so I thought this might be an interesting addendum to discuss

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/31/ny...s.html?_r=4&hp

Patrons of movie theaters, road side carts, restaurants etc will no longer be able to purchase a soft drink larger than 16 oz. Leaving aside any political arguments about personal freedom and nanny state government, does this have any chance of actually affecting obesity? I used to have this little thing I'd do when I drank soda, it's called have another. Refill please!

A friend of mine suggested that if he really wanted to combat obesity he'd rip out the seats in theaters and install treadmills.

I heard about that on the radio this morning. 32+ ounces is way too big, IMO. I don't drink sodas anymore, but when i did, I could not finish 32oz. I always found a 21 oz cup including a modest amount of ice was plenty. However, I think this is stupid. There are more important things than to legislate how big a drink cup you can buy.

If you notice they never go after the "booze makes you fat" ideal. Way too much $ to be made that instructs our politicians to turn a blind eye. Not that Im for government telling me what size soda I can drink.

He also wont go after the "for profit" healthcare system either - another cash cow that tells him to keep quiet or else. Sure, go after the soda makers that will make a big difference <sarcasm>.

Well, they could rein in the personal injury lawsuits that cost doctors a fortune in malpractice insurance too - lots of ideas but limiting soda size! Now that's going to have a lasting impact.

The soda and fast food industries probably love this. Now people will just order two "mediums" at 16 oz apiece than one 20 oz "large".

Besides, most joints give you about 4 oz of soda in a 20 oz cup, that's 3/4ths full of ice.

20oz is actually a small in many places today. I've asked for a medium, expecting to get that size and get handed a full quart instead.

GRRRRRR. We are messed up when it comes to eating. Portion sizes, palates that only crave sweet, salty, and fatty foods, too many processed foods, school funding being cut so they cannot offer healthier meals and funding being cut so many places do not have the ability to host gym class, etc etc etc. Yikes.
