Opinions on potential Diamondback bike purchase...thanks!

I am looking to "get started" after 30+ years off the bikes. Yes, to lose weight and get back in shape. I am a Clydesdale (230 pounds, 69 years old) and have a recent hip implant. Otherwise good health. I am looking at this bike this afternoon:

https://houston.craigslist.org/bik/3053622572.html

Opinions? thoughts? offer price? Guy says it's in good shape and he graduated up into a "vintage" old road bike (guess he got the bug).

Thanks, Tony

It looks like it is a 21 inch frame--will that fit? How tall are you?

Oh, welcome to biking!

The guys of your height should speak up, but my spouse is about your height and rides a hybrid with a 19 inch frame, so it might be big for you.

It looks like this bike is around $300 new, the price for the lightly used doesn't seem too bad. If it fits I would offer a bit less. If it is still for sale. Good Craigslist bikes can disappear fast. It gives you a chance to try biking out and to see how you like it. My first bike was something similar. If you do a lot of riding it might be a bit sluggish. At that point you can graduate to a better bike. Like many of us have done.

Thanks, I will try it out to see the fit. I was looking at new 20" frame sizes online. My daughter has a 20" Giant and it fits me well (one ride though). I have set up a meeting with the seller tomorrow after work, unless the bike is sold first.

Looks like I missed it. never heard back from the seller today. I guess these bike sell easily on CL. So I may bite the bullet and look at a new Trek 7100. Although I do have a line on this Trek FX 7.2 (but it's priced near new):

https://houston.craigslist.org/bik/3042607700.html

What is a fair price for the FX in this almost new condition? It's a 20 size and that should fit my 5'11" height and 31" inseam.

Diamondback is owned by the same company that owns Raleigh. While the DB company has been purchased a few times through the years, the products haven't sunk to the same level as the Mongoose and Schwinns being sold through X-Mart. I would compare them to the Fuji brands being sold by Performance Bike: not top-of-the-line but far from being department store junk.

Five hundred is way too high for an FX 7.2. New the list is $549 and often bike shops discount a bit off that price. The Trek FX series of bikes though are good bikes and the 7.3 is a popular model around here. The 7.3 has better components.

I just looked at the web site of a good size bike shop I know in Mpls. They have similar hybrid type bikes that are 2010 models for $50 to $100 off of list.

Maybe you should hit up a couple of bike shops. Ride a number of bikes to find what is comfortable and well sized for you. And see if they have any close out models.

Yes, it's a good idea to hit the bike shops. Tomorrow afternoon I will be near one and will stop by. I also need to verify the correct stand over dimension for any bike I go for. I'm pretty sure a 20 size is correct for this Trek series, but it won't hurt to verify. I have been on my kid's Giant Suede and we are the same height.
