Hello from Tallahassee, FL

I am turning 40 next Wednesday and I want to get in better shape so I thought I would go the bike route. There was a thread in another forum I am a member of a few days ago asking for input on a bike for a 300lb rider. I am pushing 270lbs and the thread got me even more motivated. So yesterday I pulled the trigger so to speak and went shopping.

I ended up with a 2011 Marin Pioneer Trail bike. It was last years model and marked down to $400. I went to another shop and looked at a few other bikes but I liked the first one and liked the vibe of the first shop better. I went back and they dropped the bike to $375 so I got it, a helmet and a Camelbak for $504 out the door.

Got it home and took it for a short spin on a little trail that parallels the road. It is actually paved and was a pretty smooth ride. This is the first time I have been on a bike for more that a few feet in over 20 years.

Downloaded an app to track where, speed, etc... turned on Pandora and 39 minutes and 5 miles later was sitting back at home. Even though I had to stop once for a few minutes and walk the bike on one particularly long hill coming back but for the first ride I am somewhat satisfied with the result.

Was not sore this morning but I could tell I was on a bike for 40 minutes and I went and picked up a pair of padded shorts...

Details of the ride here...

Distance 5.13 miles
Duration 38m:44s
Avg Speed 7.9 mph
Max Speed 21.8 mph
Calories 460 kcal
Altitude -4 ft / 199 ft
Elevation 406 ft ↑ / 459 ft

I am hopping to drop a few pounds doing this along with healthier eating...

Grats on your first right , and my condolences when you catch the bug .... nothing else ever gets done after you catch it

5 miles is a great first ride, let us know how ride two goes and remember to ride for fun

After a quick Google i now know where Tallahassee is LOL, I blame this forum for knowing more USA places than Australian places.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I grew up in Tallahassee. I plan on moving back soon. Good luck with your bicycle life, I hope that it's as rewarding as it is for me.

You will fit right in--detailed ride report of the very first ride! A warning though--don't trust the calorie counters on these gadgets, they have a tendency to overestimate, sometimes by quite a bit. After riding a week or two your butt should be seat adapted. Looking forward to your ride reports!

Congratulations on the bike. When I turned 40 I bought a motorcycle. A bike would have been a much better choice because the next 16 years was year after year adding pound after pound.

Welcome, I am in Thomasville (30 minutes away), and just got into cycling as well. Good luck with your venture. Check out CCCyclists.org group C rides, I am on "Group: Jump Start"'s email and plan on riding with that group soon.

And I am sure you plan on to the St. Marks Trail.

Have fun!!!

Gd rule is 40odd kcal per mile.

Become a calorie calculator, it's unbelievably easy to eat more than you think and probably the reason most people are in the situation the find themselves in today, not counting is a hard road to walk.

Wow, that's impressive in Talahassee this time of year. I worked out there in the summer a few times for the State Dept. of Management Services building some big database systems and training them on software architecture and development; that was back in the days of Gov. Lawton Chiles. June was hot for his ex-Canuck/California-we-have-a-dry-heat Clyde. A ride I might appreciate would be afterwork from the gov't IT offices to Benigan's for some cold ones! Keep it up! Sounds like you're burning more than 40 kcals/mile in that heat!

I'm just around the corner from you, off of Shamrock on Shannon Lakes. Nice neighborhood and connecting trails to ride...

Pretty good - three rides in and only a sore a@@ which padded shorts helped.

Ride three was on the Micossukee Greenway this was more a trail ride as the two previous were in my neighborhood and down a paved trail. I took my 8 year old boy and his BMX bike... It was enjoyable spending time with him but made the ride longer than it should have been and harder on me having to stop and walk up hills with him. I can't wait to go back and ride it solo.

I will have to get some pics - the scenery is great on that ride. You come out of the woods at the top of a hill looking down into a pasture with a huge oak tree in the middle.
