    Update: Just finished ride number 4!!!

    MY first ride in over 20 years was a rough 3 miles, and just finished ride #4, I went 6.6 miles and averaged 10.7mph after working a 12 hr shift on the job. I feel a lot better after this ride than the first one, other than terrible butt pain. It has already got me thinking about a Brooks saddle, my question to all of you that have been through this is. Should I endeavor to persevere, with my saddle, and if so how long do I have to go through this until I know for sure my saddle will or will not work for me. Also I have always over done it with everything Ive ever done and Im wondering if I might be increasing my rides to quick, I am really excited to have discovered how much fun it is to ride, workout, and sweat, it's been a long time since I've done anything but sit on the couch and eat and feel miserable about myself so any help on how to pace my rides would be greatly appreciated. One other note I have never posted or blogged on any forum ever, and I want everyone on here to know what a blessing it is to read and be a part of a group that I can relate to, and can relate to me.     IMO the first 100 miles it doesn't matter what saddle you have. It's going to hurt. I suggest 20-30 minute rides 3 times a week. If you want to do more try walking on days you don't ride. I have 3 Brooks B17s and it's the only saddle I ride on. It's not for everyone so I can't say whether it's right for you.

    You will get a lot of answers to your questions for sure on this subject. Here is what worked for me on both my bikes and what worked for my wife on her bike.

    The saddles that come with stock bikes suck, plain and simple. They are an easy way to cut costs and since, well, a saddle is very personal sorta thing, I guess that is to be expected.

    The first bike I bought was a road bike and the saddle killed me. I did research like you and I went with a B-17 Saddle. For me, it is about being comfortable and if I was having pain doing 5 miles, doing 10 miles would be killer. I did not take the thought of "trying to tough it out". It was my butt and it hurt. So brooks it was.

    While doing some research people mentioned that the brooks was uncomfortable and there was a break in period but I did not go through that. I loved my brooks. Then it was time to start commuting to work on my mtn bike commuter. The seat sucked so I made another change to the same saddle, different color. Much better.

    Then my wife started riding and she got a new bike. She had REALLY bad saddle pains. You know the saying... if momma aint happy, no one is happy so brooks for her and she loved it.

    That was my journey in saddle land. Let me know if you need any help or advice.

    It's impossible for us to tell you whether your pain is just the normal process of getting used to riding, or a result of poor position on the bike, or because the saddle doesn't suit you.

    One clue would be where the pain is felt. Is it over your sit bones? If so, probably nothing to worry about, it will wear off. If it is the soft tissue between your legs that hurts, either your position is wrong - your weight may be being borne by the narrow part of the saddle, instead of the wider part at the back - or the saddle isn't right for you. It may take you a while to work out which.

    As for the rest, ride as much as you feel able. I don't think 30-45 minute rides are going to do you any harm.
    There have been many days when I haven't felt like riding, but there has never been a day when I was sorry I rode.

    Well the saddle that is on my sirrus hurt on the test ride around the block, talked to the guys at the LBS and he said about the same thing as yall, suffer through it and if it doesnt get better in a few weeks then I could swap it and they would still help me out on price of swap. All im thinking is ive invested what is a lot of money to me for the bike, and for quicker comfort and less chance of losing my enthusiasum for riding and losing weight the price of the Brooks would still be a wise investment if all the reviews of it are close to being true.
