Tour De France - Good for a laugh

An article written on SBNATION.COM explaining the Tour de France. I found it amusing.

Anyone else watching? I enjoy watching and thinking, "A 1/8 mile long hill makes me cry and almost fall over. Look at these guys powering up what I would describe as a 'wall'."

I love watching the TDF but trying to find it on tv is a real pain. Anyone watching it online at all?

billyymc 06-27-12 03:54 PM

I have trouble watching because of the fans. It's f'ing obnoxious the way they get in the way, scream in the riders faces.

The riders should be allowed to wear studded Rollerball-style gloves and should get points for each spectator in the roadway they nail with them.

Loved that.

Is there a way to watch TDF online? I have no cable and I'll be out riding at 8:00am...

Here you go

The Tour really is poorly supported on US TV. In europe, my brother gets to wach FULL live coverage of every stage and every day of the tour. I have over 100 TV channels from Dish Network and its nowhere to be seen. I just cant watch it on a PC :(

WildcatRx 06-27-12 04:52 PM

Every stage will be on USN, which used to be versus. I also believe NBC will be streaming each stage online.

CraigB 06-27-12 07:57 PM

Around here, Versus is now NBC Sports. And they cover the Tour every year. You just have to decide which of the 3 or 4 daily airings you want to watch. The early live feed is pretty much all Paul and Phil. If you want Bobke you have to watch one of the later, edited broadcasts. At least that's the way it's been the last few years.

I liked this line in the article " The silent agreement between riders and fans is this: get as close as you like, but a) do not knock me over, and b) do not complain when I decide you should be hit in the face."

I loved watching that, because the guy running along side was in a doctors outfit, with a fake syringe, and was "doping" him.

The irony of all that, and what makes it funny to me, is that of course he denied the doping claiming he ate bad meat when in Spain that had been tainted with a chemical. Except that chemical is banned in Spain, and France. And they religiously test their meat for it apparently. So, in the end, that spectator who got punched should be given a damn medal, and a trip in the clark of the course head car for the whole event.

Also, there is a guy on youtube who uploads all of the latest pro cycling events covered by NBC Sports (and in perfect quality HD to boot). And is religious about doing it on the day of as well. Reluctant to post his info here on the board publicly, but i will reply to any PM's asking about it with his YouTube page link.

I'll be out of town for the first 6 stages...such a dilemma on which broadcasts to DVR. Live action is great, but it's just not the same without Bobke!

I always drive my wife nuts with watching the Tour. We changed our cable package since last year, so I don't know if I will be able to get the boradcast, but I will most likely find it online somewhere if I can't get it on the TV.

Big Pete 1982 06-28-12 09:46 AM

I enjoy watching every year. I've watched with my Dad since I was a kid. It's definitely changed over the years and it would be cool if they some how got guys to stop doping, but that's been around since the beginning of the Tour and probably ain't going away. Anyway, it's still fun to watch.

Last year I watched it on a pirated feed of Eurosport, but I was annoyed at the days I missed or when I had meetings interrupting my watchage.

So this year I signed up for the NBC Sports web package, for $30. I figure $1.50 per stage, not a bad deal. I should be able to watch them at my leisure this time, too.

you'll love this then...I made this to commemorate a monumentous event...the punch heard round the world! (a nod to fans of TV's Batman with Adam West)
