Used 2006 Bontrager Race X Lite??
 

I broke my rear wheel and need a replacement...

A guy in a local bike club offered me a:
2006 Bontrager Race X Lite
(silver in color, has about 4000 miles on it, pared spoke pattern)
$100


Will this hold up to my weight?

I am 6'1" and currently weigh in at 245 (down from 308 earlier this year!)

I ride about 200 miles a week - all pavement, average condition (various bumps/potholes/etc.), very hilly.

I ride a 1993 Trek 5200 w/Ultegra. Current Wheel is the stock/factory Matrix/Sonic 32hole Ultegra Hub.
(Just over 2000 miles total on bike...bike was ridden about 500 miles in 1994, than sat until this spring and I've got 1600 miles on it this year)


My head is SPINNING from all the wheel info/reviews on the web...

Just not sure this wheel will hold up to my weight. I need something SAFE and strong...

Bontrager had problems with cracks at the spoke nipples (especially on drive side) of these wheels just before/during this time frame. I looked at a set in the same price range last year and found a crack. So carefully inspect before you buy.

Personally, I would give it a miss. First, Bontrager wheels aren't known for their durability. Secondly, I really do view the purchase of used wheels as purchasing, "somebody else's problems".

+1 With the kind of miles you're riding now durability becomes very important.

I'd avoid them, read the thread below. If you can afford $100 I'd have a local wheel builder build up a rear wheel for you for $150-200. 32-36 spokes with a beefy rim and you'll be set for a long time.

+1 on the problems with cracks. Gina's 2006 rims cracked after 14,000.
